Ellensburg Teen Hurt In Arrest Files Civil Claim Against City
ELLENSBURG - Attorneys for a 14-year-old boy injured during an arrest last month have filed a $125,000 civil-rights claim against the city, claiming the teen was handled roughly by police because he is black.
Lonnie Priester suffered a broken nose and facial cuts requiring nine stitches while being arrested for fourth-degree assault Aug. 18.
At least two witnesses, including a former Kittitas County sheriff's deputy, allege police used unnecessary force in arresting the youth.
In a sworn statement, former deputy George Williams said a compliant Priester was handcuffed behind his back, spun around several times and thrown face down onto the ground.
An investigation by the Yakima Police Department failed to uphold the charge of excessive force, Ellensburg Police said.
Priester faces charges of fourth-degree assault stemming from the dispute with another youth, as well as resisting arrest and being a minor in possession of alcohol.
