Taking A Classic View -- From Rodin To Audubon, This Fall's Visual Display Highlights Some Renowned Favorites

Tired of contemporary art? Think Hammering Man in front of the Seattle Art Museum is a hunk of junk and that painters ought to paint something instead of a lot of lines and squiggles?

This fall's for you. The visual arts lineup is full of big, blockbuster classical shows. It doesn't get much more classical than Tacoma Art Museum's upcoming exhibit of 50 Auguste Rodin bronzes, accompanied by drawings and paintings. Or, for outdoors-loving Northwesterners, how about the Seattle Art Museum's big show of John James Audubon's watercolor paintings of birds? These are the original paintings used to create the landmark ornithologist's guide, "The Birds of America."

If glass sculpture is more to your taste, a couple of the glass world's heavy hitters are having local gallery shows. Seattle's glass king Dale Chihuly will have a show of new work at Foster/White Gallery in September, and Bertil Vallien will have an October show of new works at William Traver Gallery. Vallien is a Swedish master glass artist and a chief designer at the Swedish glass manufacturer Kosta Boda.

Finally, for costume and design fans, the Seattle Asian Art Museum is mounting a show of historical Korean costumes and textiles. And, for something altogether different, the Henry Art Gallery, though officially closed for remodeling, is having a one-night only (Oct. 13) special lecture/film event featuring the Academy Award-winning costume designers who created the outrageous

disco-queen drag outfits for the movie "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert." The original outfits will be modeled.
