Horse Racing -- Mitchell Riding High With Yakima Record
YAKIMA - Jockey Gallyn Mitchell set a single-day track record by winning seven races on one card to upstage the Washington Oaks yesterday at Yakima Meadows. The meet's leading rider broke the former record of six wins jointly held by Gary Baze, Tex Hollingsworth and Doug Schrick.
Mitchell, who won the first five races, knew he had an opportunity for a good day after the first two.
"I knew I was on some live mounts today and felt great after winning the Daily Double," said Mitchell, who went on to win with seven of his 10 mounts. "The adrenaline was building after each win, and when the fans started cheering me, I was on top of the world."
Mitchell tied the record in the seventh race aboard Pier Pressure and set the Yakima mark by guiding Schu Scootinboogie (9-1) to a 2 1/2-length victory in the eighth.
"The feeling was building and building, and after a while, I was three feet off the ground," said Mitchell, 32. "I've never done anything near this before."
The top North American riding feat at one track was recorded in 1989 at Arlington when Pat Day won eight races on nine mounts.
Mitchell had a chance to equal that mark aboard In The Act in the $28,800 Oaks, but she faded to sixth after leading early. Mitchell now has 108 wins on the way to his first Yakima Meadows riding title.
In the Oaks, Long Enough won her first stakes when favorite Unprincipled ducked in sharply on the lead in the stretch, losing momentum. Long Enough, with Bill Southwick, went on to a 2 1/2-length win over Tajun in 1:44 2/5 for the mile and a sixteenth. Unprincipled was fourth.
Frankel wins his Way
DEL MAR, Calif. - Tinners Way made history for trainer Bobby Frankel when he sped away entering the stretch to win the $1 million Pacific Classic by 4 1/2 lengths over Soul of the Matter at Del Mar.
Frankel became the first trainer to win the same $1 million race four years in a row. The only Classic he didn't win was the inaugural in 1991, when he didn't have an entry.
"I've just been lucky with the right horses," said Frankel, who was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame last Monday. "I wanted this so badly. I had faith in the horse and I didn't want to be wrong. I feel really, really good."
Slew of Damascus, owned by Jill and Dave Heerensperger, set the early pace before fading to fourth.
Tinners Way, ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye, covered the 1 1/4 miles in 1:59 3/5, just one-fifth of a second off the race and track record of 1:59 2/5 set by Bertrando in 1993 and matched last year by Tinners Way.
Frankel began his streak here with Missionary Ridge in 1992, then won with Bertrando in 1993 before Tinners Way's two victories. Frankel's seven starters in the four events have earned $2,675,000 in purses.
He said the next start for Tinners Way may be in the Arlington Million on the turf, then he might consider running him in the Breeders' Cup Turf. In 23 starts, Frankel has never won a Breeders' Cup race.
