Prized Recruit Is Eligible At The UW -- Jamie Redd Will Join Women's Basketball Team

Jamie Redd, a prized point guard, is academically eligible to play for the University of Washington's women's basketball team, the university announced today.

Redd, a 5-foot-9 high-school All-American who had been signed to a letter of intent by the UW, recently earned a college entrance-test score high enough to meet NCAA requirements, the school said.

Redd graduated from International Studies Academy in San Francisco with a 2.8-grade-point average.

That means that when the 1995-96 season begins, the Huskies will have their most decorated recruit ever.

Redd, who averaged 29 points a game last season en route to becoming the Bay Area's Metro player of the year, was one of 10 players named to the Parade Magazine high-school All-America team.

Blue Star Report, a Philadelphia-based recruiting newsletter covering girls high-school basketball, ranked Redd No. 26 on a list of 80 of the country's top players.

At Washington, Redd will join four other scholarship freshmen: Amber Hall, 6-1, Vancouver, B.C. (Britannia High); Molly Hills, 5-8, Edmonds-Woodway; Jenni Kincaid, 6-1, Waterloo, Iowa, and Malinda Lynch, 6-3, South Jordan, Utah.

"I wouldn't be surprised to see her dunk in one of our games," UW Coach Chris Gobrecht said of Redd. "I've seen her hang on the rim."

Redd was one of three high-school players named to the 12-player roster for the West team in this summer's Olympic Sports Festival.

"She can change the course of a game," said Gobrecht, who watched festival tryouts in Tucson involving more than 200 players.

"Jamie is a phenomenal athlete who also plays under control and with great intelligence. She's very aggressive. She loves to attack the basket."
