Summer Basketball -- Bci Boys Team Begins Practice For Tournaments

Eric Sandrin and Reid Anderson of Shorecrest High School, and Kyle Sweet of Snohomish, will play for Basketball Congress International teams from Washington state in two national tournaments this month.

Practices begin tomorrow for 20 players divided into two squads.

The 6-foot-8 Sandrin and 6-1 Anderson will play for the `A' squad coached by Ed Boyce of Decatur High School. Sweet, a 6-8 senior, is on the `B' squad coached by Jon Palarz of Kirkland's Lake Washington High School.

Ed Pepple, Mercer Island High School coach, who traditionally has coached the top Washington team, is now the state program coordinator.

After practice games against Canadian all-stars Friday and Saturday at Mercer Island High, the teams leave Monday for the Adidas Big Time tournament in Las Vegas July 17-22.

They will next travel to the BCI Summer Prep International in Phoenix to compete July 25-31.

Among the other players on the `A' team is Quincy Wilder, a 6-2 senior at Decatur. Wilder, who returned yesterday from the elite Nike All-American Camp, is considered one of the top high-school guards in the country.

His BCI teammates include Michael Johnson, a 6-3 guard at Ballard who is perhaps the top junior in the state, and 6-10 forward Brian Wilson of Chehalis. Wilson gave an oral commitment to play for the University of Washington.

Meanwhile, another Shorecrest player, 6-3 Brian Parker, will compete for a team sponsored by Sport Washington and Adidas that will play in two Las Vegas tournaments next week.

The team, comprising mostly Metro League players, is organized by Francis Williams, former Rainier Beach High School and BCI coach. The group will play in the Adidas Big Time tournament July 17-22 and the Izzy Washington Phi Slamma Jamma Tournament July 25.
