Tennis

Pete Sampras wanted plenty of grass-court play before he attempts to win a third consecutive Wimbledon crown next week. And plenty is what he got.

After winning his first Queen's Club title in London yesterday, he was back today to collect his second after a total of 134 games in 10 sets played over two days.

After beating Guy Forget in straight sets to win the singles yesterday, Sampras teamed up today with fellow American Todd Martin to beat Sweden's defending champions Jan Apell and Jonas Bjorkman in the doubles final 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

The doubles was played today because all play Saturday was washed out by rain, forcing the singles semifinals and final to be played yesterday. After wrapping up the singles, Sampras then played his doubles semifinal for a total of 111 games in eight sets in five hours and 20 minutes of play.

Yesterday, after saving three match points and rallying from a 5-2 deficit in his semifinal against German Marc Goellner, Sampras fired 21 aces in a 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (8-6) triumph over Forget.

Olympics

The International Olympic Committee changed its age-limit rule, clearing the way for Juan Antonio Samaranch to seek another term as president in 1997.

Three days after rejecting a proposal to abolish the age limit altogether, IOC members, meeting in Budapest, approved a compromise solution that raises the mandatory retirement age from 75 to 80.

Samaranch, president since 1980, turns 75 next month.
