Preps -- Shorewood Basketball Coach Plucked From Rival's Bench

SHORELINE - The architect of Shorecrest High School's vaunted basketball defense will take his coaching talents to Shorewood High School.

Larry Stewart has been named boys basketball coach at Shorewood. He has been an assistant the past seven years at Shorecrest.

Stewart succeeds Doug Porter, who resigned after coaching Shorewood for three seasons.

For Stewart, who lives in Shoreline but has been a physical-education teacher for 15 years at Sequoia Junior High in Kent, Shorewood will be his first head-coaching job.

"I'm pretty enthusiastic about that," Stewart said. "It will be a good step for me. I've met with parents and players at Shorewood and they seem to have the same enthusiasm. I'm hoping it will be a good marriage."

Stewart was in charge of the defense that helped Shorecrest make four straight Class AA state-tournament appearances - including a second-place trophy in 1992 and a fifth-place finish in 1994.

Stewart and Shorecrest Coach Marv Morris will coach against each other next season when Shorecrest moves up to join the Western AAA Conference.
