1 Top Student Achievers Honored At Garfield Today
A total of 100 elementary, middle-school and high-school students, mostly from the African-American community, will be honored at 3 p.m. today in the Garfield High School auditorium, 400 23rd Ave.
The Seattle Chapter of LINKS, Inc., a national service organization of African-American professional women, will present its 20th-annual Youth Awards program, citing the "best and brightest" in academic achievement and community involvement.
Many of the young achievers have earned a straight-A gradepoint average. All will receive certificates of merit.
Thirty-three high-school seniors will share about $38,000 in scholarships.
Sponsors of scholarships, which range from $100 to $4,000, include Airborne Express; Anheuser-Busch Inc.; The Boeing Co.; Dr. and Mrs. Howard Colston; The Seattle Medium newspaper; First Interstate Bank; Robert and Micki Flowers; Melvin Jenkins; David Sims; Bruce Taylor, and Eugene Robinson.
