Mia Martini, Popular Italian Singer

CARDANO AL CAMPO, Italy - Mia Martini, one of Italy's most popular singers, was found dead in her home yesterday. She was 48.

Police refused to comment on the death of the performer and songwriter. Her record company representative, Beppe Nocera, speculated Ms. Martini died of a heart attack.

Ms. Martini, dressed in a track suit, was found lying across a bed. The ANSA news agency reported there were no apparent signs of foul play, and Ms. Martini may have tried to telephone for help. Her hand was found near a phone and an address book was on the floor, ANSA reported.

It was not immediately clear when Ms. Martini died. She was last seen two days ago by a neighbor, who called rescuers yesterday. An autopsy was set for tomorrow.

Ms. Martini recorded many hits in Italy and performed frequently around the country.
