Dosewallips Dam Scrapped

TACOMA - Tacoma City Light has dropped plans to build a small hydroelectric project on the Dosewallips River on the Olympic Peninsula.

The 13-megawatt Elkhorn project generated a dispute between the utility and state agencies that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Tacoma planned to divert most of the river's flow into a tunnel. It argued that the agencies had no legal authority to decree how much water must remain in the river for fish and wildlife.

In a decision handed down a year ago, the Supreme Court disagreed.

Tacoma withdrew its application for a federal license late last month. Officials said it the project no longer is economically

attractive.
