Prep Track And Field -- Cedarcrest Senior: A Run Of Success

Jacob Predmore didn't want to join his high-school track team. He wanted to play club basketball that spring three years ago.

"But my dad wouldn't let me because he didn't want to be driving me all around," the Cedarcrest senior said. "He said either baseball or track, and baseball was really boring for me."

So for want of a driver's license, a willing chauffeur or a more tranquil disposition, Predmore walked onto the track at school - and into school history.

Predmore, the defending Class A state triple-jump champion, has defined boys track and field at Cedarcrest.

"He won a fourth-place trophy for us at the state meet by himself," Cedarcrest Coach Bruce McDowell said.

After scoring 36 of his team's 37 points at district, Predmore had the meet of his life at state the following week - despite the flu - and earned top-four finishes in the 110-meter hurdles (third, 15.13 seconds), high jump (fourth, 6-4), long jump (third, 21-10 1/2) and triple jump (first, 47-6). He was the only state qualifier for the Red Wolves of Duvall and scored 27 points.

"And he could have done well in the 300 hurdles and easily could have placed in the 400 meters," McDowell said. "But you're only allowed to do four events."

His triple-jump mark was a personal best by more than a foot and was long enough to have won any of four state meets last spring. He's the state's top returning triple jumper.

"In terms of track, he's definitely the best that's come through this school," McDowell said.

He's the school's top all-around athlete, also a first-team all-Cascade League receiver in football and guard in basketball.

Track recruiters at Washington, Eastern Washington and Washington State have shown interest in him, and he visited UW and EWU.

Not bad for a guy who has never run track in the summer and who plays other sports in the fall (football) and winter (basketball). For a guy who only started competing in track his freshman year. For a guy from a small school that didn't own a hurdle until this year.

And, "I don't feel I've really peaked at all," said the school record holder in six events. "I'd like to make it so they (records) won't be broken for a long time, if they ever were going to be broken."

That's not the only record he has his sights on. Within range is the state's all-time triple jump record of 50 feet, 3/4 inch, set 18 years ago by Wilson's Aaron Williams. The state-meet record is 49-3 1/4 (Central Kitsap's William Dozier in 1989).

And he's only 5 1/2 inches short of the Class A record set by Washougal's Ray Jacobs in 1981.

"I think I can probably go 51 or 52 this year," said Predmore, who will miss another week of the season with a slight groin pull. "At the first meet I compete in, I'd like to at least get back to 46 feet, and then by the Pasco meet (Sunfair) April 15, I would like to get a PR and just keep progressing from there."

Should take him right past the rest of the state into the stratosphere of triple jumping. Perhaps most significantly past all the Class AAA KingCo Conference athletes who seem to get so much more annual recognition than anyone from the little school in Duvall.

"That's kind of nice," he said of surpassing the top KingCo marks. "In basketball and football, you never know how good you are compared to them, but in track, what you get is what you are - your marks are what you are. So you know if you're faster or better. And people are always saying AAA and AA is better, and this is a way to prove it's not."
