Ardenvoir Driver Wins Southwest Tour Event

Garrett Evans, who changed a bent front wheel during the midrace break, held off pole starter Shane Hall to score a 19-second victory yesterday in the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour Winter Heat 200 in Tucson, Ariz.

Evans, of Ardenvoir, Wash., started 18th in the 26-car field. He averaged 61.127 mph for the 75 miles.

"We were lucky we had that (lap 92) stop," Evans said. "The car would tap-dance through the corners."

RUNNING

Peter Fonseca of Canada broke away in the final 1 1/2 miles to win the Houston-Tenneco Marathon, running a personal best of 2:11:52.

David Mora of Bellevue was the top American, finishing seventh overall. Mora, who works for the Department of Ecology and runs for Brooks, finished in 2:15.02, coming in 4 minutes faster than Olympic qualifying time.

Tatiana Pozdiokova of Ukraine broke away from defending women's champion Alvetina Naoumova of Russia to win in 2:29.57.

Soccer

The American Professional Soccer League is set with seven teams for this season. Owners accepted an application for a franchise in New York, while the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers and Los Angeles Salsa withdrew.

The league will operate with five holdover teams: the Colorado Foxes, Seattle Sounders, Montreal Impact, Toronto Rockets and Vancouver 86ers. The Atlanta Ruckus completes the lineup.

BOWLING

Dick Weber, 65, averaged 241.89 for nine games to grab the lead in the $65,000 Northwest PBA Senior Classic in Beaverton, Ore.
