Girls Hoop -- Bellevue Holiday Tournament -- Defending Champ Redmond Gets 6Th -- Mustangs Survive Rally By Fremont
BELLEVUE - The Redmond High School girls basketball team went from first to sixth in the Bellevue Holiday Tournament.
The Mustangs, last year's tournament champion, claimed sixth place in the 1994 event by holding on for a 61-55 victory yesterday over Fremont High of Oakland, Calif.
Redmond (5-3) rebounded from its tournament-opening loss to win two straight, and survived a furious fourth-quarter run by Fremont.
Redmond led by 20 heading into the final period.
Aubrey McFadyen provided the early spark, scoring 10 of Redmond's 12 first-quarter points. She finished with a game-high 22. Lauren Ashbaugh was the only other Mustang player in double figures with 12.
Four Fremont players scored 10 points or more, led by Sedika Cooper's 18.
OTHER GAMES
Holy Names 56, Lakeside 39 - The Cougars (6-3) blew out to a 29-15 halftime lead and coasted to the fourth-place trophy. Ellie Olson nailed three three-pointers and finished with a game-high 15 points. Miranda Cummings added 13 points and Anne Evans popped in 10, all in the first half. Lakeside's only double-digit scorer was Theresa Wagner with 10.
Kentridge 64, Eastside Catholic 44 - The Chargers finished on a strong note, outscoring Eastside Catholic 18-4 in the second quarter to take command.
Denise Lum-Lung led a list of four Kentridge players in double figures, scoring nine of her 13 points in the second half. Charity Jordan followed with 12 points, while April Morse and Kim Hipol had 10 points each.
Marissa Dean paced Eastside with 13 points.
North Kamloops (B.C.) 46, Newport 45 - The Knights (1-7), who lost their first game of the tournament in overtime to Kent-Meridian, lost another heartbreaker. After leading 18-5 at the end of the first quarter, they fell behind by a point at halftime, 23-22, and were in a dogfight the rest of the way.
Becca Huttula led Newport with 14 points, Laurie Ramstedt added 11 and Anna Mickelson 10.
Red Bluff (Calif.) 44, Specturm (Victoria, B.C.) 42 - The Spartans (10-4) held on to take third place in the tournament with a 4-1 record. Their only loss came to Kent-Meridian in the semifinals. Spectrum (14-5) wound up fifth with two straight losses.
Justine McMahan topped the Red Bluff scoring list with 15. Spectrum's Erin Bentley and Christine Rigby tossed in 13 points each.
