Napoleon Death Mask Is Back
WEST VANCOUVER, B.C. - A rare mortuary mask of Napoleon Bonaparte that was stolen from a home here last weekend has been recovered after a hit-and-run accident.
The discovery was a major breakthrough in the theft of a priceless collection of Napoleonic memorabilia early Sunday. The most valuable item stolen was the mask, which was cast by Napoleon's physician upon the emperor's death in 1821.
The mask - purchased by the owner 15 years ago - is one of seven cast at the time. Although police could not estimate its value, a similar one sold at a Paris auction in 1990 for $620,000.
Among other items taken and still missing are a lock of Napoleon's hair, his sword, several of his medals, his telescope and a number of his letters.
