NFL -- Onward Mighty Bills: Levy Pens Fight Song
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - It's got a beat you can score touchdowns to and it may bring fans to their feet.
The team's first fight song, "Let's Win for Buffalo" by Bills Coach Marv Levy, first hit the air on Monday night during the coach's cable TV show. The studio audience eagerly sang along. Yesterday, a professional musician volunteered to help put the song on tape.
But reviewers were less enthusiastic about the 66-year-old baritone's debut effort.
"It's a charming song, but I think the words are too complicated for football fans," said Robbie Ann McPherson, a music reviewer for the Buffalo News.
"About all they can handle when they're all riled up for the game and filled with beer is, `The Bills make me want to shout.' "
Levy said he got so tired of hearing "that doggone `Bear Down, Chicago Bears' " during Buffalo's Oct. 2 loss to Chicago that he promised his players he would write a fight song if they beat Miami.
The Bills won 21-11 on Sunday to move into a first-place tie with the Dolphins in the AFC East. "And they held me to it," Levy said.
During a team meeting on Monday he gave the players an a cappella performance that, according to the man who determines their playing time, had everybody clapping along. Levy said defensive lineman Bruce Smith asked for a rap version.
"I told him I don't do rap," the coach said.
Paul Maguire, host of Levy's TV show, compared it to the inspirational "Notre Dame Victory March." But Marc Stout, who hosts a morning show on Buffalo classic rock station WGRF-FM, gave it a thumbs down.
"It sounds like it's from the '30s," he said. "It's not up to date enough. We'll play it, but we'll rag on it."
Perhaps Levy isn't likely to win a Grammy to go with his Harvard master's degree and four AFC titles.
But maybe, in a manner befitting the four-time Super Bowl runner-ups, he could come in second.
Notes
-- Wide receiver Willie Green was waived by Tampa Bay. Green, signed this season after spending three years with Detroit, had nine catches for 150 yards and no touchdowns this season.
-- Cleveland acquired cornerback Reginald Jones from New Orleans in exchange for an undisclosed draft choice.
-- Philadelphia signed punter Bryan Barker, who spent four seasons with Kansas City. He replaces Mitch Berger, cut after averaging 38 yards on 25 punts.
