Man, 19, Charged In Grandfather's Killing

SUMNER - A 19-year-old Pierce County man shot and killed his grandfather Monday because he was tired of having the 80-year-old tell him what to do, prosecutors allege.

Jason Sutton was charged with first-degree murder yesterday in Pierce County Superior Court and was being held in the Pierce County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail. He pleaded not guilty.

Clifford Sutton, a retired woodworker, was stacking wood behind his home outside Sumner when he was shot in the head and killed.

The younger Sutton, who lived at the home along with his brother and father, got a rifle, walked to the garage and shot his grandfather, according to charging papers.

The young man pretended to look for his grandfather after his grandmother, Virginia Sutton, heard the shot, and the two came upon the body together, the charges state. While Sutton's grandmother called police, the younger Sutton moved the rifle to another area on the property, according to the papers.

Police found the gun about 300 feet from the victim.

Sutton was arrested Monday night after being interviewed by detectives.

In July, King County prosecutors charged Sutton with first- and second-degree kidnapping after he allegedly posed as a police officer to lure two West Seattle children into a vacant building. A trial on those charges had been scheduled for November.

Sutton was released from the King County Jail early last month after posting bail with the help of his grandfather, authorities said.
