Menopause -- Article An Insult To Baby Boomers
I am writing to let you know of my concerns regarding "Menopause is Hot," by Janet Cawley of the Chicago Tribune. I found Cawley's article an insult to myself and the women I know. The article is a very poor depiction of what we think and feel. I am a "baby boomer" who left the "me generation" attitude of the sixties years ago. After marriages, pregnancies, raising children, having careers, caring for our families, getting divorces, paying taxes and living full lives it has taught many of us that what we thought in the sixties and early seventies is not really what life is all about. Your author seems to be stuck in a "time warp."
We have grown up. I am tired of commonplace articles (such as Cawley's) written about how 12,890,000 of us feel. This article portrays women running to cocktail parties discussing abortion, sex and now menopause. I think not! Most of us do go to functions and discuss politics (even intellectually, Janet), spiritual growth, our families, our businesses, taxes, etc. - we really are not still in our twenties and confused about what life is all about, where we fit in and what is going on with our bodies. Many of us have been going through hormonal changes each month for about 30+ years and we are not confused, overwhelmed or mystified by another normal physical change in our bodies. I sincerely believe that many of us don't find menopause as a revelation and that "the hot flash" does not replace the Cold War. Nice try at selling - however, it is a pretty poor "hype"; using the percentage to imply that we all feel this way shows a lack of regard for your readers' intelligence. Marcia Naeseth Redmond
