Bothell Cougars
Coach - Dan Bunten, first year.
1993 record - 1-5 in Crown (tied for fifth); 1-8 overall.
Top returning players - OT/DT Derek Campbell (5-10, 220, sr.); RB/DB Jules Sherwood (5-9, 160, sr.); RB/DB Clint Cameron (5-9, 160, sr.); OL/DL David Sage (5-9, 210, sr.; RB/LB Rich McCoy (6-0, 190, sr.); QB Rod Westman (5-11, 180, jr.); LB Sam Meyers (5-11, 180, sr.).
Key newcomers - (OT/DT) Kyle Bigham (6-4, 250, sr.); LB/TE Art Draper (6-3, 210, jr.); LB/TE Phil Marsh (6-3, 190, jr.); LB/G Jacob Jackson (6-3, 205, jr.); OT/DT Blake Murphy (6-3, 250, so.).
Outlook - Cougars should be improved but might have trouble looking like it as they get used to new 3-4 defense, new wing-T offense and new coaching staff while plowing through tougher, rougher Crown. Looking for first winning season since 1984. They might find it next year.
Eastlake Wolves
Coach - Dale Cote, second year (1-8).
1993 record - 1-5 in Crown (tied for fifth); 2-7 overall.
Top returning players - RB/LB Mike Cappelletti (5-11, 200, sr.); LB Jeff Sakamoto (5-11, 180, sr.); WR Zack Galfano (5-11, 175, sr.); DB/WR Scott Gudmundson (5-10, 175, sr.); QB Si France (6-3, 195, sr.); QB/DB Brant Ust (6-0, 175, jr.); RB Miguel Sigari (5-11, 190, jr.); WR Ole Vigland (6-1, 175, sr.); OL/DL Shawn Whitcomb (6-0, 235, sr.); C/ILB Marshall Beeson (5-11, 210, sr.).
Top newcomers - None yet.
Outlook - The only team in KingCo without a graduation loss (school opened with no seniors last year). France finished second in KingCo passing last year (848 yards) despite Ust's emergence as starter in late season. Ust (broken foot) will miss first month of this season. Galfano and Vigland ranked 2 and 8 in KingCo receiving. Cappelletti and Sigari both averaged 5 yards per carry. Lack of depth is weakness, but if healthy Wolves should contend.
Inglewoor Vikings
Coach - Frank Naish, 16th year (79-62).
1993 record - 6-0 in Crown (first); 11-2 overall (lost to Tumwater 33-7 in Class AAA state title game).
Top returning players - SE/DB Evan Herring (5-10, 171, sr.); QB/LB Darrell Stoa (5-10, 166, sr.); RB/LB Marcus Anderson (6-0, 230, sr.); RB/LB Gary Peterson (6-1, 232, sr.); OL/DL Curt Armstrong (5-11, 201, jr.); OL/DL Brad Harter (6-2, 209, jr.); OL/DL Jared Delgado (6-3, 257, sr.); OL/DL Jon Parsons (6-3, 236, sr.); TE/DL Everett Fowler (6-3, 207, sr.); RB/DB Marquise Brown (5-10, 169, sr.); SE/DB Mike Bishop (5-9, 158, sr.); RB/FS Ryan Grekowicz (5-10, 173, sr.); OL/DL Sam Bates (6-3, 255, sr.).
Top newcomers - RB/DB Ryan Burleson (5-10, 165, jr.); RB/DB Kevin McDaniel (5-10, 167, sr.); RB/DB Lamar Hicks (5-10, 164, jr.); RB/DB Tim Kim (5-7, 158, jr.); RB/LB Kip Andersen (5-10, 181, jr.); OL/LB Dennis Trimble (6-0, 180, sr.); OL/DL Jeddy Peko (6-1, 250, sr.); OL/DL Dennis Small (6-3, 215, jr.); OL/DL Brandon Lahti (5-11, 190, jr.); TE/LB Brady Yeager (6-3, 167, sr.).
Outlook - Vikings graduated entire offensive backfield and top receiver from state finalist. Defense that returns seven starters is key to strong start and return to playoffs. Winner of next week's Inglemoor-Woodinville game (one-point overtime win last year) could determine division champ for second straight year and this time it would mean division's only playoff spot.
Juanita Rebels
Coach - Mike Thomas, fourth year (5-22).
1993 record - 1-5 in Crown (tied for fifth); 1-8 overall.
Top returning players - OLB Jeff Hill (6-3, 210, sr.); CB Ryan McConville (6-0, 170, sr.); WR Ben Fairbanks (6-2, 180, sr.); QB Tom Linarelli (6-3, 185, sr.); OLB Andy Heffron (6-4, 214, sr.); DL Jeff Martin (6-0, 215, sr.); C/DL David Hume (6-1, 240, sr.); DL Jeremy Morales (6-2, 250, sr.); WR Dan Ferguson (6-3, 180, sr.); RB Jon Eide (5-5, 170, jr.).
Top newcomers - CB Aaron Sherred (5-9, 165); TE Tom Leptich (6-1, 180).
Outlook - Linarelli finished fifth in KingCo passing last season (590 yards) despite starting the season as as backup. Fairbanks ranked fifth with 19 catches. Rebels look strong at skills positions again and could be division's most improved team. Must get big line and linebacker play to contend.
Lake Washington Kangaroos
Coach - Ron Sidenquist, sixth year (18-27).
1993 record - 4-2 in Crown (third), 7-2 overall.
Top returning players - C/LB Jay Hart (5-11, 198, sr.); QB Adam Allred (5-11, 180, sr.); FS Chuck Vanderford (6-2, 195, sr.); CB Lance Landry (6-0, 182, sr.); OLB Tim Repass (6-2, 201, sr.); KB Andy Baldridge (5-11, 185, sr.); FB Ryan Lovell (5-11, 180, jr.); FB Josh Bouma (5-10, 193, sr.); OLB Rory Trunkhill (5-9, 190, sr.); TE Bob Ferguson (6-2, 205, jr.); QB Joe Whitesel (5-11, 180, sr.); OLB Jason Gilliland (6-2, 212, sr.); OG Scott Millen (6-1, 193, sr.); OT Travis Johnson (6-2, 203, sr.); G/DT Jarrod Bryant (5-9, 220, sr.); DT Lane Schafer (5-11, 183, sr.); OLB Craig Baerwaldt (5-9, 176, sr.); DT Alex Logan (6-4, 250, sr.); NG Tom Rodda (5-11, 175, sr.).
Top newcomers - LB Mark Cook (6-3, 225, sr.); OT/NG Kevin Snowden (6-1, 210, jr.); TE John Hart (6-1, 198, so.).
Outlook - Six starters on offense and five on defense return, including all four offensive backfield starters. If young lines mature quickly, Kangs could hop into crowded playoff picture.
Redmond Mustangs
Coach - Rik Haines, fourth year (14-13).
1993 record - 3-3 in Crown (fourth), 4-5 overall.
Top returning players - CB/RB/WR Jeremiah Ingersoll (5-10, 175, sr.); CB/RB/WR T.D. Haines (5-11, 172, sr.); C Greg Clauson (6-1, 220, sr.); OG/NG Tony Owens (6-5, 270, jr.); OT/DT Jon Poort (6-5, 210, jr.); WR/FS Eric Johansen (5-10, 155, sr.); WR/SS Brian Martin (6-1, 180, jr.); OLB Ryan Pickering (5-10, 165, jr.); RB/DB Kenny Shane (6-0, 175, sr.).
Top newcomers - QB Brandon Boone (6-0, 160, jr.); T Adam Poort (6-5, 210, jr.); LB Brandon Pickering (5-10, 165, jr.); LB/G Nick Cooklin (6-0, 215, sr.); OL/DL Joe Majors (6-4, 290, so.); LB/L Chris Gregory (6-3, 220, so.); RB/WR Matt McDougall (5-9, 160, so.); RB/WR Jason McDougall (5-9, 160, so.); WR/DL Ryan Dennis (6-2, 215, sr.).
Outlook - Coach Haines lists five players who run the 40-yard dash in less than 4.6 seconds (Ingersoll, Haines, Boone, Johansen, Shane) and another two (the McDougall twins) in less than 4.7. If Boone can throw and any of the others can catch, Redmond could contend; if not, could just go nowhere fast.
Woodinville Falcons
Coach - Terry Agnew, fifth year (21-18).
1993 record - 5-1 in Crown (second); 8-2 overall (lost to Bellevue in state qualifier).
Top returning players - QB/S Ryan Lentz (6-2, 195, sr.); WR/KR/CB Coby Dilling (5-10, 165, sr.); OT/DT Dave Dawson (6-4, 230, sr.); OG/LB Jeff Petzel (6-0, 220, sr.); ILB/OG Adam Englebrecht (5-11, 210, sr.); OT/DT Kyle Caulk (6-2, 210, sr.); RB/CB Haroon Rashed (5-11, 175, sr.); OLB/OG Danny Uffen (6-0, 210, jr.).
Top newcomers - S Marcus Tuiasosopo (6-2, 200, so.); TE/DT Brian Kertson (6-2, 210, so.); RB Ryan Prentice (5-10, 175, so.); RB/CB Jamie Tager (5-10, 170, jr.).
Outlook - Five starters on offense and two on defense return for team that has division's longest streak of consecutive postseason appearances (three). Lentz might be best all-around QB in KingCo; Dilling might be KingCo's fastest player. Graduation losses and loss of all-Crown lineman Chris Brinkman (who quit team after first week) hurt, but if depth-lacking Falcons stay healthy, should contend. (See Inglemoor outlook for game to watch).
