Sing, Sing, Sing! -- From Everett To Bainbridge Island To Tacoma There Are Choral Groups Just Waiting For Your Voice. Here's Where To Find Them.
It's the end of summer, and that back-to-school feeling is setting in. This is the time of year when singers - professional, semi-pro and strictly amateur - start looking around for that old copy of Handel's "Messiah" and wondering if there is a handy chorale around, just waiting for them to join.
Here's a list to get you started, with some particulars about how to join everything from ethnic choruses that sing in Chinese or Welsh to fine-tuned ensembles that sing with the Seattle Symphony.
And we know, we know: We've left some of you out, despite determined sleuthing. If your chorus isn't listed here, please send us the information (P.O. Box 70, Seattle 98111) for a follow-up that will complete our listing. For now, as David Letterman might put it, here we go:
Bainbridge Chorale, a mixed chorus of 110 members, led by Norma Edens (842-5473, 780-2467). This Bainbridge Island-based chorus requires no audition - just the desire to sing. Rehearsals are held Monday evenings on Bainbridge, beginning Sept. 12. The chorus needs more men; there's a waiting list for women. On Dec. 10 and 11, the group will perform Handel's "Messiah"; a spring concert also will be presented. Performances take place in Bainbridge's Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church and other Bainbridge sites. For information, call 842-2525.
Bellevue Chamber Chorus, a mixed chorus of 28 to 32 members, conducted by Ken DeJong. This 10-year-old group now performs in the
Theatre at Meydenbauer Center, where the concert season will open with an all-Mozart program with the Yakima Chamber singers on Oct. 15 and 16. Other traditional BCC performances include a Christmas concert (Dec. 17 and 18), a late-winter pops concert and an American choral revue. There are annual dues and a costume requirement. Rehearsals are from 7:15 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays in Bellevue. New members will be auditioned through September; good sight-reading skills and previous chorus singing experience are required. The chorus currently is looking for tenors and basses. For information, call Debra DeFotis, 881-0445.
