NFL -- 49Ers' Hall Has Chip On Shoulder
ROCKLIN, Calif. - Former University of Washington safety Dana Hall is the latest San Francisco veteran to check in early and, although he did so voluntarily, he isn't a happy camper.
"I come in with a major chip on my shoulder," Hall said.
To demonstrate it, he first declined three reporters' requests for interviews yesterday before he was persuaded to return. Arms folded and face stern, Hall made it clear he was in no joking mood.
"Any time you have a year like I had last year, when things don't go the way you want them to go, you'd better have a chip on your shoulder so things don't happen like that again," Hall said.
A first-round draft choice in 1992, Hall injured his right ankle after three games, losing his starting free safety job to Merton Hanks. Hall didn't play well enough to escape trade talks.
Now, he's back in the starting rotation, with Hanks moving to right cornerback, and this time Hall - who earlier this week extended his contract through 1995 - sounds serious about staying.
"I don't have a chip against anyone," Hall said. "I have a chip against what happened. I have a chip against the way things transpired. I've got to get better as a football player."
Dierdorf's son arrested
CHESTERFIELD, Mo. - The son of sportscaster Dan Dierdorf was arrested on charges of raping and sodomizing his former girlfriend, authorities said.
Daniel Dierdorf Jr., 25, was charged with two counts of rape, two counts of sodomy, one count of felonious restraint and five counts of armed criminal action, St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch said.
The woman told police she was held at knife point and sexually assaulted several times in Dierdorf's apartment, McCulloch said.
