Seahawk Camp -- New Fullback Smith Suffers Muscle Strain

KIRKLAND - Fullback Steve Smith strained his right hamstring at his first Seahawk practice.

Smith, the former Raider signed to replace John L. Williams, suffered the injury early in yesterday's workout.

Coach Tom Flores said after practice that the severity of the injury won't be known until today but that it "is not a tear or pull."

Seegers leaves camp

Stacy Seegars, 337-pound undrafted rookie offensive lineman from Clemson, slipped out of camp before the first practice.

"He told his roommate he had some personal matters to attend to and he took all his clothes," Flores said.

Notes

-- No progress was reported in efforts to sign the top three draftees - Sam Adams, Kevin Mawae and Lamar Smith.

-- If place-kicker John Kasay is a holdout next week when remaining veterans report, the Seahawks have plans to bring in another kicker so that kickoffs and field goals can be practiced. Flores won't say who is on his list of available kickers.

-- Linebacker Duane Bickett said one thing that impressed him when he made his Seahawk "recruiting" visit this spring was the "gung-ho attitude" of everyone from trainers and equipment men to the front office and players.

"It's something I haven't been around for a while," said Bickett, a Colt since 1985.

-- Rookie tight end Carlester Crumpler had the day's best catch (from Dan McGwire) and linebacker Anthony Davis had the day's only interception.

-- This is the second straight year the Seahawks have opened training camp early for rookies and selected veterans. Eighteen of the 28 teams in the league are doing the same.

Flores said, "This gives our young people and our quarterbacks a chance to get a jump start."

-- Running back Chris Warren finished third in a June made-for-TV competition involving eight running backs. Ricky Watters of San Francisco was the winner.
