WSU Picks Farrington As Coach

PULLMAN - Steve Farrington, the baseball coach at Lower Columbia Community College in Longview for the past 12 years, has been named to the same position at Washington State.

Farrington replaces Bobo Brayton, who retired at the end of the past season after coaching 33 years for the Cougars.

Farrington is only the fourth Cougar baseball coach since 1927.

"I have known Coach Brayton for a long time and dreamed of playing for him at Washington State like everyone did in the late '60's," Farrington said. "To have the same opportunity as he had is an opportunity of a lifetime."

Farrington, 42, is originally from Newport, Ore. He attended Eastern Washington University, where he played baseball, football and basketball.

He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from EWU, majoring in physical education and health with a minor in math and biology.

Farrington had a 280-149-2 record at Lower Columbia Community College. He coached the Red Devils to Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges titles in 1984, 1990 and 1992. He was named the NWAACC Western Division coach of the year six times, most recently in 1993.

"I'm very impressed with the interaction that Steve has had with student-athletes during his tenure," said Rick Dickson, Cougar athletic director. "Steve's reputation in Northwest baseball circles will greatly enhance our recruiting abilities."
