Huskies' Cedric White Transferring
Cedric White, one of the University of Washington's top recruits in 1992, has been released from his football scholarship so he can transfer to another school.
"He said he was unhappy with the city and unhappy with the school," Coach Jim Lambright said today.
Lambright said he does not where White will transfer. He has been rumored headed for Mississippi State. The coach there, Jackie Sherrill, said he couldn't talk about White, and White could not be reached for comment.
White, a redshirt sophomore who played linebacker and defensive line, was competing for a starting position, but was most likely going to begin the season as a backup. He started games two games last season at nose guard.
White, from Los Angeles, was rated highly in high school. He received the maximum 10 Best in the West votes from the Long Beach Press Telegram.
He is one of several Huskies who will not return next season. Senior Eteka Huckaby, a backup fullback, has transfered to the University of North Texas; senior linebacker Mike Derrow transferred to Gardiner Webb.
Junior receiver Theron Hill also asked to be released from his scholarship this spring. All four have cited playing time as a factor in their leaving, Lambright said.
Linebacker Curtis Bogan, who would have been a redshirt sophomore, dropped out of school for academic reasons and won't play this fall.
"This is typically what happens in the off-season," Lambright said, adding that pending NCAA sanctions and existing Pac-10 probation were not factors in the players' decisions.
