Fair Celebrates African-American Cultural Heritage
The Northwest Folklife Festival, which opens today and continues through Monday at Seattle Center, is one of the largest free folk festivals in America. Up to 200,000 people flock to it each year to experience and participate in folk music, dance, crafts, visual arts and children's programs. It's a fun place to people-watch, enjoy a variety of exotic foods and shop among booths offering fascinating goods from throughout the world.
The festival focuses on a certain aspect of the folk arts, and this year the theme is "African-American Traditions: Prelude to a New Age," a look at the rich cultural heritage of the Northwest's African-American community.
Highlights include "Threads of Our Souls," an African-American quilt exhibit with quilts from Northwest collections, including some from the South, and contemporary examples of the traditional craft; "Jackson Street After Hours," an exhibit of vintage and contemporary photos of artists and places that were prominent in the lively Jackson Street nightclub scene of the 1940s and '50s; and "Holiday Festival of Black Dolls," featuring dolls designed and handcrafted by African Americans, using such materials as paper, porcelain, egg shell, straw, cloth, wood and clay.
Other festival highlights include the Grange Music Heritage Project, featuring dance and music from eight grange halls throughout the state; a Native American dance celebration, with performances by six dance companies; and Pure Gospel, with rousing, uplifting music from the area's finest gospel choirs. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Schedule Today
