Sea-King District Track And Field -- Hill, Burton Have Something To Prove
Big meets bring out the best in Aretha Hill and Selina Burton. The bigger the better. The more at stake, the more they relish the moment.
Hill, of Renton, easily won her third Sea-King District discus title and Burton of Hazen, had little difficulty defending her district triple jump title.
Burton's victory pushed Hazen, the Seamount League champion, into a first-day, first-place tie with Kennedy after four girls events. Both schools scored 24 points, ahead of Franklin's 22.
Defending state and Metro champion Garfield was 14th with one point.
After four events, Kennedy's boys led O'Dea 19-18. Blanchet and Eastside Catholic were tied for third with 17. Seamount champion Hazen was sixth with 13 and Metro champion Garfield had 3 points for 14th.
"This is the meet to prove yourself," Burton said after winning the triple jump at 39 feet, 9 1/2 inches. The Hazen senior leaped 40-11 1/2 last year, Washington's second-best all-time jump.
"I can get that jump back. It's just taking me longer to peak," Burton said. "My sprints have improved this year and that's kind of taking its toll right now . . . but it's a trade-off I'm happy with."
Burton had the second-fastest preliminary time in the 100 (12.4), behind Garfield's Candace Young (12.3). Young leads in the 200 prelims (25.3).
Hill's 151-11 discus effort broke the meet record (147-5) she set last year, but she wasn't satisfied. "I had an OK day," she said. "It's hard to accept OK because I have my sights set on something else."
NOTES
-- Kennedy's Leland Gayles, second in the 1993 state AA 400, placed eighth in his preliminary and failed to advance to today's final. He has been bothered by injuries this season.
-- Meghan Heily of Eastside Catholic won her second high jump title with a 4-10 leap despite windy and cold conditions. Eastside Catholic placed 1-2 in the pole vault with John Barry (14-3) and Scott Harthorne (13-6).
-- In the distance races, Kennedy's Tricia Satre took a big lead midway in her 3,200 race and sailed to a 11:04.4 victory. O'Dea's Matt Pearson easily won the 1,600 in 4:22.8.
