Transfer stations, drop boxes and Vashon Landfill

Hours: -- Transfer stations, drop boxes and the Vashon Landfill are open seven days a week, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. Transfer station hours are 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. except Factoria, which is open 8 a.m.-1 a.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. weekends. -- Drop Boxes are open daily, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., except during Daylight Saving Time the Cedar Falls Drop Box and the Vashon Landfill are open 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

Rates

Sites with scales: (all but Cedar Falls): -- Garbage, $66 per ton plus tax and surcharge totals $71.77. Minimum, $9.78 plus tax totals $10.75, passenger vehicles pay minimum. -- Yard waste, $58 per ton, minimum $7.50. (Only Factoria, Cedar Falls and Enumclaw take yard waste.)

Cedar Falls Drop Box: -- Uncompacted garbage, $11 per cubic yard plus tax and surcharge totals $12.55. Minimum, $10.75, passenger cars pay minimum. -- Uncompacted yard waste, $9.50 per cubic yard, minimum $7.50.

Recycling

Residents of unincorporated King County generally have curbside collection of recyclables. King County's recycling line can give information on haulers for unincorporated King County; a list of recycling coordinators in King County cities outside Seattle; recycling sites other than transfer stations, and private yard waste and wood/composting facilities in King County. Call 296-4466.

Acceptable materials: -- All facilities that accept recycling have bins for aluminum cans, glass jars and bottles, tin cans, newspaper, mixed paper and cardboard boxes. Plastics: No. 1 (PET bottles such as soft drinks and liquor bottles), and No. 2 (HDPE such as milk jugs, detergent and lotion bottles). -- Enumclaw Transfer Station charges $24 for refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and other appliances that contain CFCs; $10 for other appliances. -- Enumclaw accepts clean wood at $58 per ton; minimum $7.50 (passenger vehicles pay minimum).

Yard waste/King County

Acceptable materials: Leaves, grass, brush, clippings, prunings and branches under 4 inches in diameter and 8 feet in length. Unacceptable materials: -- Stumps, lumber, rocks, dirt or sod, demolition debris or plastic. -- Containers used for transport must be emptied and taken home for disposal or reuse, especially plastic bags.

Household hazardous wastemobile

King County has mobile collections throughout King County in areas not served by permanent household hazardous-waste collection facilities. Residential hazardous waste is also accepted at no charge at the South Household Hazardous Waste Facilities, Second Avenue South and South Kenyon Street, Seattle. Open Thursday, Friday, Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Acceptable materials: Pesticides, oil-base paints, thinners and solvents, hobby chemicals, cleaning products, motor oil (or call 1-800-RECYCLE), latex paints (can be dried out instead). Unacceptable materials: Explosives (call Bomb Squad, 911), business wastes.

Upcoming wastemobile locations: All locations free to King County residents. Household hazardous waste

-- Includes paint, household cleaners, pesticides, chemicals. -- Save for periodic county roundups, April through November. The next roundup is April 7-9, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, Edmonds High School, 7600 212th St. S.W. Call 388-3425 for future sites.

Recycling

-- Curbside recycling is available to almost all single- and multiple-family residences. Call your garbage collection service or city hall for details or to sign up. -- Many drop-off centers countywide, including at drop-off boxes and transfer stations. Free recycling of mixed paper, newspaper, glass, bottles, tin and aluminum cans. -- Call 388-3425 for locations and information.

Pierce County

Pierce County Solid Waste Division, general information: 593-4050. Disposal sites are privately run by Land Recovery Inc., 847-7555.

Rates

-- Residential garbage, $13 per cubic yard, $13 minimum. Car tires, $6. Large appliances $30. -- Yard waste, first cubic yard free, additional yards $6. If mixed with garbage, $13 per cubic yard. -- Sites are privately run and accept cash only.

-- Hidden Valley Landfill, 17925 Meridian Street E., Puyallup. Open 8 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. The following locations are open 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesdays through Sundays: -- Prairie Ridge Transfer Station, South Prairie Ridge and Prairie Ridge Road, Bonney Lake. -- Purdy Transfer Station, 14515 54th Ave. N.W. Recycling, yard waste and hazardous wastes

Pierce County offers all residents curbside garbage, yard waste and recycling services. All transfer stations have drop-off boxes for recycling. The county holds regular hazardous waste collections in various neighborhoods; call 593-4050.
