Class AA Notebook -- Teams Change, But Mccullum's Back -- Bulldog's Prep Basketball Career: Three Schools, Three Trips To State

TACOMA - Sherrell McCullum is beginning to know his way around the Tacoma Dome.

McCullum finished his high-school basketball career yesterday, capping his third Class AA state tournament appearance in three different uniforms.

McCullum, a Garfield center, helped the Bulldogs to a fourth-place finish. They defeated Eastmont 79-70 yesterday.

As a freshman, McCullum played at Seattle Prep, which lost two straight games at state. During his sophomore year, he transferred to Blanchet, which finished sixth.

DIVISION I `CRADLE'

Lakeside girls Coach Sandy Schneider estimates she's had 15 players go on to play Division I college basketball.

Among those are Margaret Fuchs and Mary Sarigumba (Brown University), Michelle Perkins (Washington) and Chris Pagano (started at UW, now playing for Division III Middlebury College in Vermont).

The first of Schneider's players to go on to Division I college ball? Libby Gates, Lakeside Class of 1982, who went to Cal-Poly Pomona.

Gates is the sister of Microsoft honcho Bill Gates.

SCOTS SCHOLARSHIP

Shorecrest High School is a winner on and off the basketball court.

The Scots took fifth place in the Class AA boys tournament by beating Monroe 71-55 yesterday to finish the season 22-6.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association awarded its school sportsmanship award to the North Seattle school for the boys tournament.

Junior guard Reid Anderson received the WIAA sportsmanship medal after Thursday's 69-42 victory over Ballard. Senior forward Brent Nieuwenhuis received the sportsmanship medal after Friday's 56-47 triumph over Gig Harbor.

Nieuwenhuis was cited for his sportsmanship even though he didn't play at the Tacoma Dome. He tore the medial colateral and anterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee at the Northwest District tournament.

NOTES

-- Eastmont sophomore Shannon Spies was diagnosed with anemia late in the regular season. Spies complained of cramps in her legs and fatigue, which led to the diagnosis. Spies has taken iron pills for the condition, and ranks among the tournament leaders in scoring and rebounding.

-- All that's missing is a forward to complete the tournament's academic college girls dream team. Chief Sealth center Naomi Mulitauaopele has accepted a basketball scholarship from Stanford. Lakeside's Zakiya Pressley and Sara Wetstone will attend Princeton and play basketball. Meadowdale's Sarah Brandt, a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, has been accepted by Harvard. She is considering playing college basketball.
