M's Spring Training -- Cancellation Throws Off Mariner Pitching Rotation

The rainout scrambled the best-laid plans of Seattle pitching coach Sammy Ellis. Starter Roger Salkeld threw only 14 pitches, had a runner on second, one out and a 3-2 count when the rain came.

Salkeld will throw on the sideline tomorrow and start again Friday in an A game against the Cubs. John Cummings will throw tomorrow and start the B game against the Angels on Friday. Craig Clayton, Tim Davis and Bobby Ayala all will pitch an inning today.

Manager Lou Piniella was happy to have the game called after 45 minutes' delay.

"If they had tried to go on with it, I would have pulled Tino (Martinez) and Edgar (Martinez), coming back from leg injuries. Salkeld could not have pitched again after that long delay."

Note

-- The rain caused the grounds crew to put the infield tarp on, the first time that had been done at a Mariner home game anywhere. A tarp is not needed in the Kingdome, and Tempe Diablo had no tarp when the Mariners were there for spring games in the past.

Brad Holman threw on the sideline after missing 10 days with a detached retina. He will work in the bullpen again Thursday.

Right-hander Ted Power will have his right shoulder operated on by Dr. James Andrews on Friday. If Dr. Andrews finds limited damage, he will perform arthroscopic surgery, and Power will attempt to come back later in the season.
