Snohomish County Journal -- Free Oil Recycling

Free oil recycling: Used oil filters, used motor oil, used vehicle batteries and some types of used antifreeze may now be left at all nine Snohomish County Public Works solid-waste facilities in Arlington, Everett, Granite Falls, Gold Bar, Lake Roesiger, Mountlake Terrace, Monroe, Oso and Sultan.

The materials also are accepted and recycled at all Schuck's Automotive stores in Snohomish County.

The metal filters are recycled to make rebar and other steel products, while old motor oil is cleaned and blended with new additives to make re-refined motor oil.

For two years, Snohomish County's entire fleet of 796 cars, trucks and heavy equipment has been running on re-refined motor oil with no problems. Re-refined brands now on the market cost about the same as "virgin" motor oil, according to the public-works department.

Re-refined motor oil is sold at Puget Consumer Co-op in South Everett and at many auto-supply stores.
