Mcintosh Makes An Easy Pick For Metro League Soccer Mvp
The pressures of college recruiting were more intense than those for any algebra exam Wynne McIntosh might take. Many people thought she would never choose a college.
But Metro League Lakes Division girls soccer coaches had no trouble choosing a Most Valuable Player. McIntosh, they felt, merited that honor.
McIntosh, a senior at Roosevelt who is bound for the University of Portland, is considered one of the top high-school girls soccer recruits in the state. But she found choosing a college no small feat.
The decision consumed her life until she orally committed to Portland.
"It was terrible. I honestly had no idea, until it just hit me one morning," McIntosh said. "I had pros and cons list taped to the walls and everything.
"That didn't help. I woke up and knew Portland was the right place."
McIntosh also considered Notre Dame, Washington and Santa Clara.
Recently, she was selected to the U.S. national women's Under-20 soccer team pool, an honor given to the country's top 24 players. So it was no surprise that after scoring 23 goals as a Roughrider forward this season, McIntosh was voted most valuable player by the Lake Division coaches.
"She's been the best forward in the league the past four years," Roosevelt Coach Joel Watters said. "I think her award was based on that fact as much as what she did this year."
McIntosh was the star of the league. A deadly scorer from nearly anywhere on the field, she led Roosevelt to a 10-4-2 record and fourth-place finish in the Metro League tournament.
LAKESIDE ENJOYS ITS RUN
What was supposed to be a rebuilding year with a first-year coach evolved into a remarkable run to the Class AA state tournament for the Lakeside Lions.
The Lions lost 4-1 to eventual state champion Shorecrest in the semifinals and 3-2 to Hanford in the game for third place.
The Lions posted a 13-4-3 record. Their fourth-place finish at state was the best showing among teams in the Metro League.
Lakeside and Blanchet led the league, with five players each selected to the All-Metro team. The Braves earned a state-tournament berth, but lost in the first round. Seattle Prep, which won a third consecutive league title, had three players selected.
