Seattle Journal -- $1 Downtown Parking

$1 downtown parking: Holiday shoppers are reminded that there now are about 1,300 parking spaces available in downtown Seattle at $1 an hour for the first two hours and $2 for the third.

The reduced-fee parking is available in the Second and Union Garage at the northeast corner of Second Avenue and Union Street and in the former Frederick & Nelson garage between Sixth and Seventh Avenues and Olive and Pine Streets. Access is from Sixth, Seventh or Olive.

The Shoppers Quick Park program was announced Friday by Mayor Norm Rice and representatives of the Downtown Seattle Association, Republic Parking Northwest, Inc., and AMPCO Parking Services.

Gary Beck, executive vice president of Republic Parking, said plans call for continuing the Quick Park rates at the two garages through 1994.

Shoppers also can use Easy Street tokens - worth $1 each and available by presenting a purchase receipt at major downtown stores - to park at these and other downtown garages.

The Seattle City Council recently voted to reduce downtown and other commercial-area parking meters from $1.50 to $1 an hour, but because meter works have to be adjusted, the reduced rate will not go into effect until after Jan. 1.
