Hawks Acquire Ex-49Er Guard

The Seahawks today acquired guard Jason Childs, who was cut Tuesday by the San Francisco 49ers.

Childs, 6 feet 4, 285 pounds, spent time on the 49ers' practice squad last season after being cut as an undrafted free agent by the Buffalo Bills. He went to camp with San Francisco this year, was cut, re-signed to the practice squad, activated for one game, then released.

Childs played at the University of North Dakota and is a native of Plymouth, Minn.

BLEDSOE WON'T START

New England Coach Bill Parcells plans to start quarterback Scott Secules against the Seahawks Sunday.

"That's what I'm planning on," said Parcells in a telephone interview. "That's what I think in my heart."

Rookie Drew Bledsoe practiced yesterday for the first time since injuring the medial collateral ligament of his left knee against Phoenix Oct. 10.

Parcells said Bledsoe probably will be the backup QB Sunday.

Interviewed before Parcells' announcement, Bledsoe said it would be disappointing not to play Sunday.

"That's a game I've been looking forward to for a long time," the former Washington State quarterback said. "I've wanted to come back out to the Northwest and play in front of my friends and family."

NOTES

-- Seahawk Coach Tom Flores said linebacker Anthony Davis, a Pasco native, will be activated Sunday because of his special-teams ability. It will be Davis' first NFL game.

-- Starting right linebacker Rufus Porter practiced yesterday with a brace on his left knee.

-- Bledsoe used the word "terrible" to describe the bad luck of his former WSU backup, Mike Pattinson, who is out for the season after breaking a collarbone Saturday against Cal. "He's a guy that's hung in there for the longest and waited his turn," Bledsoe said. "It's disappointing to see that he's out."

-- With Kevin Murphy (thigh) sidelined with a thigh injury, deep snapper-tight end Trey Junkin was pressed into service as Seahawk scout-team linebacker yesterday. Junkin was drafted by Buffalo as a linebacker in 1983 out of Louisiana Tech.
