New Art For The New World

Northwest sculptor Richard Beyer, creator of the popular "Waiting for the Interurban" sculpture in Seattle's Fremont district, hammers a block into place on a statue of Christopher Columbus, as an $87,000 commission for the city of Columbus, Ga. The brass sculpture is a focal point of the city's Riverwalk Park on the Chattahoochee River. It will be dedicated tomorrow, in honor of Columbus Day. The 8-foot sculpture depicts Columbus in four phases of his life, each accompanied by a parrot, a symbol of the New World.
