Lifter Breaks Bench Press World Record

AUBURN - Anthony Clark yesterday set a world record in the bench press, lifting 735 pounds at the U.S. Powerlifting Federation Northwest Open.

Clark attempted 751 pounds, but lost control of the bar when it began moving.

The 27-year-old Clark, 5 feet 8 and 341 pounds, set the former record of 725 pounds four months ago. He also can squat 1,025 pounds and dead-lift 748 pounds.

WSU WOMEN TOP UNM

PULLMAN - Kim Lynass and Jenni Druffel scored first-half goals to lead the No. 21-ranked Washington State women's soccer team past New Mexico 2-1.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Cougars (5-2) and sent the Lobos (5-1) home with their first loss of the season.

-- WSU's Josephat Kapkory, defending Mountain West Cross Country Classic champion, was runner-up to Mizuno's Pat Porter yesterday in the Classic's individual men's 8,000 meters. Porter was clocked in 23 minutes, 44 seconds; Kapkory finished in 24:07. WSU's Patrick Muturi was fourth in 24:28. On the women's side, former WSU standout Jennifer Bravard, running unattached, won the 6,000 meters in 20:38.

-- Shelly Stockman, a Seattle University assistant coach from 1989 to 1991, has been named head men's and women's tennis coach for the Chieftains. She replaces Janet Adkisson, who had been head coach since 1981.

Stockman is the women's tennis director at the Bellevue Athletic Club.

-- The second annual Emerald Cup, pitting the NCAA Division I Washington Husky women's soccer team against its counterpart from NAIA-member Seattle University, will be decided at Husky Field today at 3:30 p.m.

The Chieftains are ranked No. 4 in the nation in the NAIA poll, while Washington entered the NCAA Division I poll at 18 this week after a pair of wins over top 5 teams and a 2-0 loss to the No. 1-ranked defending national champion North Carolina Tarheels.

-- The Seattle University women's cross country team finished second behind national power George Fox College at the George Fox Invitational. Three freshmen led the way for Seattle University over the 4K course: Sally Shaw, seventh, 15:28; Rebecca Elijah, eighth, 15:39; and Sara Ulrich, 14th, 16:05.

-- Western Washington University's men's and women's soccer teams were both victorious yesterday, with the men shutting out Simon Fraser University 1-0, and the women defeating The Evergreen State College 4-0.

-- The Seattle Pacific University men's soccer team upset the University of San Diego 4-3. The Falcons (7-1) are ranked third in Division II. San Diego (6-2), ranked 24th and the Division I national runner-up last season, had its five-match winning streak snapped.

-- Heidi Hamlin led the Seattle Pacific women's cross country team to its second win in as many meets against Portland State. Hamlin, finishing third overall, led six consecutive SPU harriers across the finish line. Hamlin completed the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 23 seconds. SPU won with 25 points to Portland State's 35. The Vikings' Shawn Witmer won the race in 17:12.
