Metro League's Mountain Division Football Capsules
BLANCHET BRAVES
-- 1992 record - 5-2 in league (third in division), 5-4 overall.
-- Coach - George Monica, sixth year, 15-27 record.
-- Top returnees - TE Arnie Maish (5-11, 195, Jr., 1st-team All-Metro); FB/LB Gino Valdivia (5-10, 215, Jr.); OT/DT Andy Burton (5-11, 240, Jr.); QB/S Dennis Fahey (5-9, 160, Sr.); RB/S John Kenny (5-11, 175, Sr.); C/DT Jon Kessler (6-4, 190, Sr.); SE/LB Brian Larson (6-0, 170, Sr.).
-- Top newcomers - OG/DG Casey Burk (5-9, 215, So.); RB/DB Rumain Harris (5-6, 155, So.).
-- Outlook - Fahey is first-year starter at quarterback after playing free safety last season. His favorite target will be Maish, a two-way starter, who is a good blocker with soft hands. Valdivia is only other returnee on offense. Offensive line lost five starters and will struggle. Defense is loaded with five players returning and decent speed. How quickly Fahey develops will decide Braves' fate.
CHIEF SEALTH SEAHAWKS
-- 1992 record - 5-2 in league (second in division), 6-3 overall.
-- Coach - Jacob Ellis, fourth season, 9-18 record.
-- Top returnees - WR/CB Marvin Kasim (5-9, 165, Sr., 1st team All-Metro); RB/LB Lanell Jackson (5-10, 245, Sr., 2nd team All-Metro); RB/LB Shon Sweet (5-8, 175, Jr., 2nd team All-Metro); OL/DL Joe Bowman (6-2, 255, Sr., 2nd team All-Metro); OL/DL Todd Anderson (6-2, 260, Sr.); WR/DB Terrance Downs (6-3, 190, Sr.); C/LB Robert Harris (5-9, 235, Jr.); WR/DB Winston Keys (5-8, 165, Sr.); TE/LB Shawn Mullen (6-7, 210, Sr.); TE/LB Dwayne Wagner (6-1, 195, Sr.).
-- Top newcomers - QB Jonathan Peifer (5-9, 180, Sr.); OL/DL Robert Kitiona (5-10, 305, Jr.); OL Sambo Agemoto (5-8, 245, Fr.); RB Samuel Seumae (5-8, 165, Fr.); OL Jesse Counts (6-2, 245, Jr.).
-- Outlook - Ellis, Mountain Division Coach of the year last season, could put together a good track relay with Kasim (hand-timed 4.3 seconds in 40-yard dash), Keys (4.5) and Downs (4.5). Kasim, (Class AA champion in 100m, 200m, 400m) is league's premier player. Offense is loaded with talented receivers, but can first-year starter Peifer get them the ball? Keys will platoon at quarterback to run wishbone offense. Kitiona sat out last season and should lead defense. Sealth made biggest turnaround (1-8 in 1991) last season, but depth (only 33 players) will be a factor.
FRANKLIN QUAKERS
-- 1992 record - 7-0 in league (Mountain Divison champion), 8-2 overall (Playoff quarterfinalist)
-- Coach - Joe Slye, 10th season.
-- Top returnees - RB/LB Jesse Kalhoun (6-2, 215, Sr., 2nd team All-Metro); RB/DB Erin Dixon (5-11, 175, Jr.); QB/DB Doug Sims (5-8, 165, So.); WR/DB Derreck Blackwell (6-0, 185, Jr.); WR/DB Derick Burfect (6-0, 180); OL/DL John Dickerson (6-1, 240, Jr.); OL/LB Rick Nelson (6-0, 190, Sr.); OL/DL James Kelby (5-11, 270, Sr.); OL/DL Dameon Ellis (6-0, 210, Sr.); RB/DB Lelan Moore (5-7, 170, Jr.); TE/LB Bobby McCallum (6-0, 210, Sr.).
-- Top newcomers - OL/DL Bryan Lawrence (6-1, 250, So.); OL/DL Kevin Davis (6-3, 270, Jr.); OL/LB Robert Fisher (6-0, 180, Sr.); WR/DB Scott Coleman (5-10, 165, Sr.).
-- Outlook - Reloading year for Quakers who lost 12 starters. Sims takes over at running veer offense after three starts last season. Backfield is deep -Kalhoun is bigger and better inside runner and Dixon has game-breaking speed. Linebacking corps is intact (McCallum, Kalhoun and Nelson) and is strength of defense. Inexperience is weakness. Traditional powerhouse is still team to beat in the division.
RAINIER BEACH VIKINGS
-- 1992 record - 4-4 in league (sixth in divison), 4-5 overall.
-- Coach - Mark Haley, second year, 4-2 record.
-- Top returnees - QB/LB Melvin Steward; RB/DB Ricky Jenkins; WR/DB Ari Marr; RB/LB Damon Williams, C Frank Reyes; T Ronnie Abraham; TE Chris Alvis; LB/RB Sal Patu; LB/RB Carl Yancey; WR/DB Jalon Johnson; RB/DB Franco Gratton; T Joie Penor; G/LB Rayford Eason; C/LB Jamaar Hicks; G Denis Agasio; T Anthony Austin; TE Clinton Taylor.
-- Top newcomers - WR Norman Taylor.
-- Outlook - Rebuilding year with many young players. Haley took over program after third game and third lopsided loss last season. Vikings went 4-2 under Haley. Expect same improvement. Defense was second in division last season and should be tough, but can Steward move offense?
ROOSEVELT ROUGHRIDERS
-- 1992 record - 1-5 in league (sixth in division), 2-7 overall.
-- Coach - D.R. Clawson, third season, 6-12 record.
-- Top returnees - QB Erick Swanson (6-2, 180, Sr.); OL Clancy Clark (5-11, 200, Sr.); OL Tatsu Komada (5-10, 220, Sr.); TB Clinton Allen (5-11,180, Sr.); LB Bill Roberts (6-1, 210, Sr.); LB Seth Pingar (6-0, 205, Sr.); LB Ethan Amerson (6-1, 185, Sr.); LB Bill Somerville (6-2, 185, Sr.); DB Ryan Brandon (5-9, 165, Jr.); DB Pete Nelson (5-10, 170, Sr.).
-- Top newcomers - FB Julian Wright (5-9, 165, So.); WR Antonio Dennis (5-8, 150, Jr.); WR Tarek Atkins (6-1, 170, Sr.); TE Pat Ashman (6-4, 195, Sr.); DL Dan Friday (6-1, 230, Sr.); DL Dan Schwert (5-11, 190, Sr.).
-- Outlook - Four players return on offense and six on defense. Two-year starters Clark and Komada are undersized, but should supply reliable protection for Swanson, who returns for second year after rocky rookie season. Roughriders dumped wishbone offense for more balanced attack. Amerson is speedy outside linebacker (4.7 40-yard dash) who is tough against the run. Nelson is only two-way starter. Fiftyplayers on roster with good but not outstanding talent.
SEATTLE PREP PANTHERS
-- 1992 record - 4-3 in league (fourth in division), 6-3 season.
-- Coach - Rollie Robbins, fifth year, 27-11 record.
-- Top returnees - QB Mike Oaksmith (5-9, 155, Jr., 2nd team All-Metro); WR/DB Shane O'Mahony (5-10, 155, Sr.); WR Kevin Murray (5-9, 145, Jr.); RB Scott Sander (5-8, 155, Sr.); TB Ian Addlaberg (5-9, 190, Jr.); FB Ken O'Brien (5-10, 215, Jr.); RB Carlos Aragon (5-9, 170, Sr.); LB/FB Josh Edwards (5-10, 170, Sr.); LB Joe Heaton (5-8, 178, Jr.); C Leon Bloom (5-10, 175, Sr.); LB Zack Gandara (5-9, 170, Jr.); G Matt Ellis (5-9, 150, Sr.); G Matt Cornell (5-9, 185, Sr.); T Joe Green (6-1, 200, Jr.); T Matt Lanphier (6-2, 180, Sr.); TE Pete Carson (6-2, 200, Sr.); K Conner McDonald (5-11, 165, Jr.); T Bryce Fisher (6-1, 205, Jr.); TE David Raney (6-2, 170, Jr.).
-- Top newcomers - T/DE Darren Lenz (6-5, 195, So.); QB/LB Cam Smith (5-11, 170, So.); RB/DB Brandon Bede (5-10, 165, So.); T James Rudulf (6-1, 220, So.); WR Matt Blangiardi (6-0, 165, So.); DB Ryan Anderson (5-8, 140, Jr.).
-- Outlook - Experienced secondary (Oaksmith, Edwards, O'Mahony) leads talented defense. Anderson returns after missing last season with a broken shoulder. Oaksmith moves from receiver to quarterback. Eleven senior returnees. Good depth, 90 players on roster, excluding 44 freshmen.
WEST SEATTLE INDIANS
-- 1992 record - 0-6 in league (seventh in division), 0-9 season.
-- Coach - Tom Burggraff, second year, 0-9 record.
-- Top returnees - TE/LB Don Sherwood (6-3, 210, Sr., 1st-team All-Metro); RB/DB Lenny Smith (5-9, 190, Sr.); G/DT Anthony Dunston (6-0, 285, Sr.); RB/DB Josh Smith (5-11, 165, Jr.); C/DT Dave Alcott (6-1, 235, Sr.); T/DE B.J. Charles (6-2, 225, Sr.); G/LB Robert Downey, Jr. (6-0, 210, Sr.); WR/DB John Grubbs (5-8, 140, Sr.); RB/DB Elton Coleman (5-7, 145, Sr.).
-- Top newcomers - T/DE Brian Zielinski (6-2, 240, Sr.); WR/DB Josh Pena (5-8, 145, Sr.)
-- Outlook - Sherwood (27 rec., 485 yds.) is league's premier tight end. Defense needs work - led league in yards allowed (2,738) and points against (344) last year. L. Smith is two-time All-Metro pitcher. Offense will move the ball and has firepower to win, but defense keeps Indians at the bottom of the division.
INDEPENDENT SCHOOL
LAKESIDE LIONS
-- Coach - Bill McMahon, 15th year.
-- 1992 Record - 2-4 league (fifth in division), 5-4 overall.
-- Top Returnees - RB Tim Curry (5-10, 155, Sr., 1st team All-Metro); G Alex Bennion (6-1, 205, Sr.); QB Adam Hamilton (6-1, 175, Sr.); OL/DL Jason Barnes (5-9, 130, Sr.); OL/DL Jim Allison (6-0, 170, Sr.); OL/DL James Kimmel (6-4, 205, Jr.); OL/DL Tom Wood (6-6, 225, Jr.).
-- Top Newcomers - FB T.J. Vasser (6-0, 185, Sr.); OL/DL Aaron Bennett (6-1, 190, Jr.); C Ryan Hazlett (6-1, 205, Jr.).
-- Outlook - Because of lack of size and low turnouts, Lions dropped out of Metro League for football only and will play a nonleague schedule for next two years. Opponents will be Class A schools, but Lions play West Seattle in season-opener Friday. Depth is problem. Curry and Bennion are three-year starters and will again lead the team. Lions should be much improved when they re-enter Metro League for 1995 season.
