Metro League Sound Division Football Capsules
BALLARD BEAVERS
-- Coach - Tam Hutchinson, first year.
-- 1992 record - 3-3 league (fourth in division); 3-6 overall.
-- Top returnees - WR/DB Alan Patrick (6-1, 180, Sr.); RB/LB Frank Whiten (5-11, 200, Sr.); WB/LB Eddie Bowen (5-8, 180, Sr.); WR/DE George Smith (5-11, 185, Sr.); RB/DB Kahlil Larry (6-0, 170, Sr.); FB/LB Jimi Dassa (5-10, 190, Jr.); C/LB Bobby Williams (5-9, 180, Jr.); OL/DL William Dossen (6-0, 220, Sr.); OLDL Rhommel Mapalo (5-9, 185, Sr.); OL/DL Joel Anker (6-0, 175, Jr.); OL/DL Tavin Britton (5-11, 165, Jr.); DB Phonesith Keopanya (5-7, 135, Sr.); DB Wen Lin (5-9, 145, Sr.).
-- Top newcomers - QB/DB Alex Zardis, (5-10, 160, So.); WG/DB Johnnie Green (5-9, 165, So.); RB/LB Sam Scott (5-8, 165, So.); FB/LB Dale Patrick (6-0, 225, Fr.); RB/DB Reuben Whiten (5-10, 160, Fr.); OL Rinku Shah (5-9, 160, Jr.); TE/DL Michael Cullen (6-0, 195, Jr.); DE William Lorenson (5-11, 200, So.).
-- Outlook - First year for Hutchinson as head coach with four new assistants who inherit program with just three returning starters. Rebuilding year around sophomores and quarterback Zardis. Patrick, a two-year starter at quarterback, has moved to wide receiver. Zardis has limited playing time as a backup and team will suffer as he learns the position. Keopanya is a heavy hitter. Freshman Dale Patrick and Reuben Whiten are impressive and will get playing time.
CLEVELAND EAGLES
-- Coach - Hoover Hopkins, third year, 3-15 record.
-- 1992 record - 0-7 league (eighth in division), 2-7 overall.
-- Top returnees - QB/DB Michael Johnson (6-2, 190, Jr.; 1st team All-Metro); RB/DB DeAngelo Greene (5-7, 165, Jr., 1st team All-Metro); OL/DL Wayne Faleulu (6-0, 227, Jr., 2nd team All-Metro); WR/DB Josh Timmen (5-11, 160, Sr.); OL/LB Tim Hackenmiller (5-9, 180, Sr.); OL/LB Chi-Hung Lee (5-8, 176, Sr.); RB/DB Charles Dale (5-8, 185, Jr.); WR/DB Mike Fields (5-10, 160, Jr.); TE/LB Mark Fields (6-1, 189, Jr.); OL/DL Sunny Fung (6-0, 168, Sr.); OL/DL Richard Post (6-1, 223, Sr.).
-- Top newcomers - RB/DB Ralph Prescott, So.; QB/DB Francisco Bolima, (5-7, 146, So.).
-- Outlook - Turnaround year for Eagles. Hopkins is teaching in the building, which should be added plus. Johnson returns as league's most prolific passer and is quickly becoming one of the Metro's premier players. Greene is a speedy tailback who had 5.7 rushing average last season. Biggest improvement is a senior offensive line led by Hackenmiller. Still a season or two away from seriously competing for title.
EASTSIDE CATHOLIC CRUSADERS
-- Coach - Chuck Tarbox, second year, 6-3 record.
-- 1992 record - 4-2 league (third in division), 6-3 overall.
-- Top returnees - FB/LB Zach Cooper (6-1, 215, Sr., 1st team All-Metro); QB/S Ryan Powell (5-10, 190, Sr., 1st team All-Metro); T Adam Baruffi (6-3, 215, Sr., 1st team All-Metro); T Bill Sullivan (6-0, 270, Sr.); LB Ian Callahan (5-11, 165, Sr.); T Pat Neason (6-3, 175, Sr.); LB Scott Lindsay (5-9, 160, Sr.); DB Ben Frost (5-9, 165, Sr.); DB John Barry (5-9, 150, Sr.).
-- Top newcomers - WR Peter Benson (6-1, 170, Sr.); RB Blaine Davidson (5-11, 175, So.); TE Mark Kauffman (6-4, 175, Sr.).
-- Outlook - Crusaders begin season with full-time quarterback. Powell, who split time with Willie Conklin (graduated), is signal-caller and an excellent athlete. Depth could be a problem. Defense needs to mature. Despite preseason honors, Cooper's ability is still a question. Early game against O'Dea (Sept. 18) may decide season. Sixty-man turnout at first day of practice. Tarbox is proven winner - guided Juanita to Class AAA state titles in 1984 and 1985.
GARFIELD BULLDOGS
-- Coach - Mark Stewart, second year, 8-1 record.
-- 1992 record - 5-1 league (second in division), 8-1 overall.
-- Top returnees - WB/FS Tony Lewis (5-10, 170, Sr.); FB/LB Sean Duncan (5-9, 200, Sr., 1st team All-Metro); TB/LB Naikia Howard (5-9, 175, Jr., 2nd team All-Metro); OL/DL Kenny Green (6-0, 245, Jr); OT/DT Jeremiah Woods (5-11, 235, Jr.); CB/WR Zhajeid Greene (5-9, 165, Sr.); OL/DL Patrick Tobin (6-2, 170, Sr.); OT/DT Colin Beard (6-1, 245, Jr.).
-- Top newcomers - TE/LB Chris Rhodes (6-2, 190, Sr.); TE/LB Karl Smith (6-3, 175, Jr.); QB Ben Meyer (6-0, 175, Sr.); QB Robert Jeffcoat, Jr. (6-3, 185, So.).
-- Outlook - Still no decision between Meyer and Jeffcoat at quarterback. Race is even, but a starter should be named before Saturday's season-opener against J. Oliver High (British Columbia). Quarterback will spend much time handing off to running backs Duncan and Howard, the best tandem in the league; they combined for 1,202 yards last season. Lewis adds speed to backfield. No returners on defense. Defensive line is thin.
HALE RAIDERS
-- Coach - Anthony Franklin, fourth season, 9-19 record.
-- 1992 record - 1-6 league (seventh in division), 2-7 overall.
-- Top returnees - OL/DL Anthony Braxton (6-1, 210, Jr., 2nd team All-Metro); C Ben Murciego (6-2, 250, Jr,); WR/CB Anthony Wood (6-0, 170, Sr.,); RB Jim Walrod (5-10, 180, Sr.); OL Pieter Sundgren (6-1, 240, Jr.); DL Kevin Iversen (5-10, 185, So.); LB/TE Robert Groves (6-1, 190, sr.); OL Jesse Monroy (5-10, 180, Jr.).
-- Top newcomers - DB James Wells (5-9, 140, Fr.); DB Matthew Wells (5-10, 155, So.); DB Ryan Love (5-11, 170, So.)
-- Outlook - Hale feels loss of All-Metro QB/DB Andre Taylor. Two days before season opener and still no starter at quarterback. Skill positions are weak. Braxton-led offensive line is the lone bright spot. Iverson is heavy hitter. Brothers Wells/Wells lead inexperienced secondary. Too many holes to fill to be a contender.
INGRAHAM RAMS
-- Coach - Gary Pounder, third year, 6-12 record.
-- 1992 record - 3-4 league (tie for fifth); 3-6 overall.
-- Top returnees - QB/DB Barry Castona, (6-2, 210, Sr. 2nd team All-Metro); WR/DB Troy Harveland (5-9, 150, Sr., 2nd team All-Metro); WR/DB Joe Smith (5-7, 150, Jr.); DL Richard Hunt (6-5, 280, Jr.); OLB Rodney Preston (6-1, 225, Sr.).
-- Top newcomers - None.
-- Outlook - Lean years for Ingraham. The glory days when the program drew 105 players are gone. Only 38 on the roster. Castona will run, pass and play defense, but he will not be enough. His favorite targets are Harveland and Smith, a pair of undersized, speedy receivers. Rams opt for passing attack. Return two starters to offensive line. O'DEA FIGHTING IRISH
-- Coach - Monte Kohler, nine years, 76-12 record.
-- 1992 record - 6-0 league (Sound Division champion), Metro League champion, 12-1 overall (Kingbowl runner-up).
-- Top returnees - DB/WR Nick Stefonick (5-11, 170, Jr., 2nd team All-Metro); WR Ryan Hupf (6-0, 165, Sr.); WR/K Pete Colasurdo (5-9, 140, Sr.); TE/LB David Hoffman (6-2, 190, Sr.); WR/DB Andy Carroll (6-0, 165, Jr.); LB/FB Demar Hutson (6-1, 210, Sr.); WR/DB Mike Bailly (6-0, 175, Jr.); C/DE Kevin Reynolds (6-2, 220, Sr.); OL/DT Todd Cunningham (6-4, 215, Sr.); DT/OG Joe Forest (6-1, 240, Jr.); RB/DB Edgar DuBose (5-7, 165, Jr.).
-- Top newcomers - DE/FB Lateef Thomas (6-0, 195, Sr.); FS/RB Ryan DuBose (5-10, 160, Jr.); DB/QB John Saunders (6-1, 175, Sr.); LB Mike Fridrich (5-8, 170, Jr.); DT James Henry (6-1, 265, Jr.); LB/OL Mike Lemanu (6-0, 205, Jr.); DE/OL Cole Langdon (6-4, 230, Jr.); QB/DB Chris Taffera (5-10, 160, Jr.); DB/WR Devonne Johnson (6-3, 190, So.).
-- Outlook - Irish lost 21 starters, but should quickly reload from the 105 players at practice. Stefonick is the only starter and has impressed. Hutson and Hoffman lead a young defense. Slight quarterback controversy between Saunders and Taffera. Friday's season-opener against Vancouver College will decide the starter. May use two-platoon system. E. DuBose and R. DuBose (cousins to former Notre Dame and O'Dea player Demetrius DuBose) will handle running duties.
