Myers Not Picture Perfect -- Fans Hurl Posters When Reliever Fails

CHICAGO - What began as your typical baseball promotion turned into the Randy Myers Poster Day Disaster.

After Chicago's closer surrendered a game-tying, two-run single to San Francisco's Todd Benzinger with two outs in the ninth inning yesterday, many Cub fans littered the field with the free posters.

But in the bottom half of the inning, Mark Grace's one-out single scored Jose Vizcaino to give the Cubs a 3-2 victory over the Giants, snapping San Francisco's four-game winning streak.

"I feel bad for Randy," Grace said. "He's allowed to blow one once in a while. The fans gave it to him today."

"It's a tough loss," Giant Manager Dusty Baker said. "You're not going to come back on Randy Myers too often. Maybe the fans gave him the posters back because he got the win."

Not exactly. The Cubs were cruising on a four-hit shutout when Myers entered to start the ninth.

"We wanted Randy to close the game, too," Cub Manager Jim Lefebvre said. "We still have the best fans in baseball."
