Academic Failings Claim 3 Cougar Recruits
Minus three scholarship recipients who failed to meet NCAA football eligibility requirements, about 50 players today were to begin freshman orientation at Washington State University.
Missing were Leon Bender, Shon Lewis and Brandon Moore, Californians who signed Cougar letters of intent in February but failed to meet NCAA academic requirements.
However, a WSU spokesman said the players are expected to enroll at WSU if they qualify for need-based financial aid. They still would have to sit out this season but would have three years of eligibility beginning in 1994.
Bender, 6 feet 5 and 225 pounds, is a defensive lineman from Santee. Lewis, 5-9, 165, is a wide receiver from San Jose. Moore, 6-0, 190, is a defensive back from Carson.
Freshman orientation will continue through Tuesday. Veterans are scheduled to report for picture day Wednesday. Two-a-day drills are to begin a week from today.
