Police Blotter -- Coast Guard Rescue

Coast Guard rescue: Sixteen people were rescued from Lake Washington after their power boat sank at the conclusion of the Seafair hydro races yesterday.

John Losh of Seattle had overloaded the power boat, said Andre Billeaudeau, Coast Guard public affairs specialist.

The 18-foot boat started taking on water between the I-90 and 520 bridges.

When the Coast Guard arrived at 6:50 p.m., the 16 men and women - all wearing life preservers - were floating in the water.

After fishing them out, the Coast Guard tried to raise the boat. "It looked like a mini-Titanic. The bow was still sticking out of the water," Billeaudeau said. "We tried to drag it up and out, but it was too far gone."

The boaters - who range in age from the late teens to early 20s - were not injured.

A Coast Guard spokesman said overloading a boat is a violation of regulations. A report on this incident is to be reviewed by a Coast Guard legal officer.
