Man Ties Record For Untying The Knot 27 Times

GARY, Ind. - Here's someone who believes in marriage. And divorce.

Frank Colbert, 69, has made history by going through divorce No. 27, which ties the standard listed in the 1993 Guinness Book of World Records.

Why does he get divorced, and married, so much?

"I've spent $10,000 on psychiatrists trying to figure out why," Colbert said Friday after his latest breakup. "I guess I just don't like living alone."

Mauna Overturf, 43, was Colbert's wife and ex-wife No. 27. They were married May 6.

Not all the marriages were so short. His first lasted five years. His second, to Lilly, the mother of his four children, spanned 22 years. Some he loved enough to marry more than once. But, in terms of longevity, it's gone downhill ever since.

What makes Colbert alternately so attractive and repulsive to women?

"Some say I have a magnetic field," Colbert said. "I don't know about that."

Colbert, a retired pipefitter who is now a professional gambler, said he's on good terms with some of the women he's loved.

"I've lived with a few of them even after the divorce," he said.

The former bar owner said he wasn't sure why he marries so many women so quickly. His friend, Lee McClellan, thinks he knows.

"He falls in love easy," McClellan said. "Every one is the right one for him. When he sees a woman he likes, he thinks somebody's gonna try and steal her from him, so he marries her."

Overturf said her ex-husband is charming and a gripping storyteller.

"The reason we married was he needed someone to take care of him," Overturf said. "We each needed something from the other. He was different than what I thought. I wasn't supposed to have a life outside of staring at the kitchen countertop."
