Mother Of Olympians, Mary Mahre Dies

Mary Ellen Chott Mahre, mother of Phil and Steve Mahre, World Cup and Olympic ski stars, has died at the age of 66. The cause of her death Sunday was not announced.

She was born in Yakima in 1927 and married David R. Mahre in 1947. She was an outdoorswoman whose hobbies included skiing, biking and mountain climbing.

She is survived by her husband, an official at the White Pass ski area, nine children and 19 grandchildren.

Phil and Steve Mahre, who are twins, are among the finest skiers ever produced by the United States. In the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo, Phil won the gold medal and Steve the silver medal in the slalom.

Basketball

Lakeside High School's Takiyah Jackson helped the Seattle-Bellevue Magic to a pair of victories in the championship bracket of the AAU 16-and-undernational girls tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Jackson had 15 points and nine rebounds as the Magic beat the Maryland Waves 72-58. Naomi Mulitauaopele of Chief Sealth added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Jackson had 37 points and 13 rebounds in the Magic's second game yesterday, a 82-66 win over the Tennessee Travelers. Mulitauaopele had 16 points and seven rebounds, Timberline's Shannon McCormick had 15 points and six rebounds and Sarah Yarborough of Lake Washington had 11 rebounds for the Magic.

The Magic advanced to the quarterfinals of the winners' bracket. They were scheduled to play the Philadelphia Belles today.

Tennis

Top-seeded Sergi Bruguera defeated Germany's Markus Zoecke 6-4, 7-6 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Swiss Open clay-court tournament in Gstaad, Switzerland.

Unseeded Gerard Solves of France, ranked 241 in the world, upset fourth-seeded Wally Masur of Australia, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).

Zoecke forced Bruguera, defending champion at Gstaad and the world's fifth-ranked player, to a 7-3 tie-break in the second set. Bruguera, 22, of Spain, next will face another Spaniard, unseeded Alex Coretja.

Coretja, ranked 72nd in the world, upset No. 8 seed Marcos Ondruska of South Africa, 6-4, 6-3.

Marc-Kevin Goellner of Germany defeated countryman Carl Uwe Steeb 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. Goellner will face Solves in the quarterfinals. The 25-year-old Frenchman, who turned professional only two years ago, defeated Goellner in the BMW tournament in Munich last May before tourney-winner Ivan Lendl stopped him.

-- Two-time defending champion Magnus Gustafsson started his bid for a third straight Swedish Open tennis title with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory over fellow Swede Mikael Pernfors in Bastad, Sweden.

Only Eric Sturgess of South Africa and Budge Patty of the United States have won the clay-court tournament three consecutive years, Sturgess from 1948 through 1950 and Patty from 1952-54.

Retired Swedish stars Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander won three titles each, but not in successive years.

-- Alexander Volkov of Russia, firing 11 service aces, beat American Jeff Tarango 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in the first round of the Gunze World Tennis.

Petr Korda of the Czech Republic outlasted Chuck Adams 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in a match that lasted more than two hours.

-- Andre Agassi will join Pete Sampras and John McEnroe in an exhibition for Arthur Ashe's Safe Passage Foundation preceding the Pathmark Classic in Mahwah, N.J.

Ashe, who died of AIDS in February, started the program in 1990 to provide tennis and academic programs to disadvantaged youngsters. Agassi will donate half his appearance money to the Ashe program and half to Agassi's charitable foundation.

Boxing

WBC heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis of Britain will fight Tommy Morrison in Las Vegas this fall. Lewis canceled plans for a defense against Frank Bruno.

Lewis' manager, Frank Maloney, said the British fighter has agreed to a $20-million, two-fight deal that will match him against Morrison in October or November and Evander Holyfield next spring.

Should Lewis retain the title, he could face Riddick Bowe, IBF and WBA champion, next summer in a unification bout.

Hockey

The Tampa Bay Lightning, frustrated by the lack of progress in efforts to find a home for the next two seasons, is considering a temporary move to Orlando.

Sailing

Skipper Dennis Conner and his yacht Winston have cut a 60-mile deficit almost in half in the past two days of the 3,200-mile Gold Cup Trans-Atlantic Race.

The Broomstick took a 60-mile lead in the first 2 1/2 days after leaving New York, but Conner and his crew have sliced the deficit to 31 miles.

Conner plans to enter this fall's Whitbread Round the World Race and is using this competition to test his abilities in ocean crossings.

Local notes

At noon Saturday, Seattle's most daring dunkers are invited to compete in the Slam Dunk Open in the Hoop-It-Up Tournament at the Seattle Naval Station at Sand Point. For those with slam-dunk fantasies who can't quite make the 10-foot jump, there's the Larry Johnson 9-foot power slam.

Three-on-three play will be from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday with proceeds to Seattle Parks and Recreation.
