Second Soccer Player Charged In Bribe Case
Jorge Burruchaga, who helped Argentina win the World Cup in 1986, was charged in Paris today in connection with allegations that Olympique Marseille, European club soccer champion, offered bribes to opposing players.
Burruchaga is the second Valenciennes player charged in the scandal. He and teammate Christophe Robert are two of three players alleged to have been offered money by a Marseille player to throw a match so Marseille could save its energy for the Champions Cup final against AC Milan.
Police today swept into Olympique's training camp in the Pyrenees mountains and took away 10 players for questioning.
Eric de Montgolfier, the prosecutor, said Burruchaga was charged with "passive corruption." The player is accused of responding positively to the bribe offer, but is not accused of actually receiving money.
Robert, who was charged earlier, has admitted receiving $45,000 to play poorly in the May 20 game won by Marseille, 1-0.
