Agriculture Director Resigns

OLYMPIA - Okanogan County rancher Peter Goldmark has resigned after just four months as director of the state Agriculture Department, citing conflicts between his responsibilities to the job and his family.

"It is not possible for me to fulfill the requirements of this important and demanding job in state government and still meet the needs of my family," Goldmark said. "Having to choose, I must choose my family."

Goldmark was appointed to the post in February by Gov. Mike Lowry.

The appointment of a farmer to head the agency drew praise from both sides of the aisle during the Senate confirmation process. Acting Deputy Director John King will serve as acting director while a successor to Goldmark is sought.
