Northwest Folklife Festival -- Culture Fair Shows It's Not A Small World, After All

Disney has it all wrong.

While Disney's munchkins sing about how small the world is, the organizers of Folklife annually bring to Seattle gems from a huge and varied world of music, art and dance.

The 22nd Folklife Festival begins today and runs through Monday at the Seattle Center. More than 1,000 performers will demonstrate the dance and music of cultures as diverse as those from Polynesia, Ukraine and Eastern Washington.

No cultural smorgasbord would be complete without culinary accompaniment, of course, and Folklife will offer 45 food booths. There will also be arts and crafts vendors, six special exhibits and children's programs.

All the entertainment is free.

Each year at Folklife, the traditional arts of one cultural or ethnic group are singled out for special emphasis. This year, the focus will be on Hawaiian, Samoan and Tongan heritage, in a program called "We Are Polynesia!"

The program features an exhibit of Polynesian artifacts and photographs at the Folklife Museum in the Seattle Center Pavilion, music and dance by such performers as Tafa Tasi O Samoa and six of Hawaii's best "slack key" guitarists. (Mainland cowboys brought guitars to Hawaii, where Hawaiian musicians tuned down the strings to create their distinctive "slack key" style.) Tafa Tasi O Samoa performs at the Polynesian Traditions Showcase, Monday 6 to 9 p.m. in the Opera House; the Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar review is scheduled for Monday 1 to 4 p.m. in the Opera House.

With so much on the schedule, Folklife can be a little overwhelming. A good way to approach it, suggests publicity coordinator Michael Paul, is to select a few events from the program and leave plenty of room for serendipitous discoveries.

"One of the great things about Folklife . . . is you come down here and you sample things that you would never otherwise search out," Paul said. "With over 1,000 performers, you're not going to complain about not seeing enough music."

There will be no films screened at Folklife this year. In the past, Folklife presented films that usually were related to the festival's special focus.

"This year, with Polynesia, we really didn't have a good library to choose from," said Paul.

Here are a few highlights to consider:

-- The World Kulintang Ensemble brings the ancient gong and percussion music of the Philippines to the Bagley Wright Theatre Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m., with support from local Filipino artists. Kulintang music was nearly extinct when University of Washington ethnomusicologist Robert Garfias discovered groups still practicing it.

-- There's more to African music than percussion. A performance of African string music Sunday, 7 to 9 p.m. in the Bagley Wright Theatre, features masters of the Malagasy valiha zither and the West African kora. The zither is made from bamboo and unwound bicycle brake cables; koras are 21-string instruments made from gourds.

-- A program called "Commonwealth of Independent States" showcases the music and dance of Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan at the Opera House, Sunday 5 to 8:30 p.m.

-- "Viva Las Americas!," from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Bagley Wright Theatre, demonstrates how the music of Spain has permeated the New World from Southwestern United States to the tip of South America.

-- Tenor sax player Big Jay McNeely recorded the biggest hit in his career, "There is Something on Your Mind," in West Seattle in 1959. After a hiatus from the stage, McNeely is again lighting up audiences with his antic sax playing. He'll be joined by several local blues musicians Monday noon to 4 p.m. at the arena. -------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------- Because of the Seattle SuperSonics' playoff games at the Seattle Center Coliseum today and Sunday, any Folklife Festival event scheduled for the Alki Room has been moved to the Rainier Room. Dance workshops originally scheduled in the Rainier Room have been canceled. Earlier programs may include incorrect information.
