Shoreline Stocks Up On Washington Talent

Shoreline Community College baseball Coach Doug Riggs has announced the signings of seven high school seniors from around the state.

Among the signees are Shorewood pitcher Brian Aasland and a pair of Everett High School seniors, outfielder Joe Gallagher and pitcher Levi Lacey.

Other seniors to commit to the Dolphins are left-handed pitcher Woody Fernandez of Evergreen High School, Centralia pitcher J.T. Tompkins, catcher Ryan Fox from East Valley (Yakima) and pitcher Jack Hooley from Bellingham's Sehome High School.

Riggs said Burlington shortstop John Best also will play for the Dolphins.

Shorecrest's Craig Oliver and Travis Parker from Blanchet will walk-on at Shoreline, Riggs said.

"I'm overjoyed with this group," Riggs said. "Next year, we're going to be real be tough."

Class AAA golf -- Tricia McClain of Cascade High School will lead a contingent of 10 girls golfers from WesCo AAA to the state tournament.

The Class AAA state tournament is scheduled for Friday at Oak Brook Golf Club in Tacoma.

McClain was the Northwest District medalist last Wednesday at Cedarcrest Golf Course.

Other WesCo golfers to qualify for state were Everett's Kylie Smith and Meredith Lamb, Oak Harbor's Lisa Wasinger, Nicole Matson and Becki Matzen, Snohomish's Laura Vitalich, Julie Harkinson and Erin Pedack and Cascade's Eyren Risdon.

The Class AAA boys state tournament is scheduled for Friday at Fort Lewis.

Matt Baird of Cascade and Tony Snoey of Edmonds-Woodway shared medalist honors at the Northwest AAA District tournament last week at Kayak, each shooting an even par 72. Other WesCo state qualifiers were Jacob Heron and Chad Roraback, Cascade; Tom Niva and Lee Wooten, Everett; Jason Himple, Marysville-Pilchuck; Eric Toomey, Shorewood; and Brian Berkenhoff, Mariner.

State softball -- The Western Conference will have three representatives at the Class AAA fastpitch softball tournament, which is scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Tacoma.

Mariner and Marysville-Pilchuck, the WesCo co-champions, and Snohomish will play at state. Mariner (18-4) finished second to Juanita at the Wes-King bi-district tournament on Saturday.

Marysville-Pilchuck (15-6) finished fourth in the bi-district tournament and Snohomish (18-6) is the No. 5 seed.

-- The Meadowdale Chiefs, winners of 19 straight games, captured the Northwest AA District title by winning two games on Friday.

The Chiefs (19-2), the WesCo regular-season champion, claimed the top district seed to state, which is Friday and Saturday in Pullman. Lake Stevens (14-6), the WesCo regular season runner-up, claimed the second and final state spot.

Class AA golf -- Seven golfers from the Western AA Conference have qualified for the state tournaments this week - the AA girls at the University of Idaho course in Moscow on Thursday, the AA boys at Idaho on Friday.

Bainbridge's Danielle Zahaba was Northwest District medalist Thursday at Sudden Valley with a seven-over 79. Other girls to qualify for state from the WesCo were all from Lake Stevens: Jenny Bloss, Stepfanie Nunamaker and Amy Reisenger.

For the AA boys, Lake Stevens' Rob Rashell again qualified for state. He will be joined at state by Brad West of Bainbridge and Owen Lewis from Monroe.

Class AAA tennis -- The Radford sisters swept the two Class AAA state tennis tournament singles berths from the Northwest District for the second straight year.

Jennifer Radford, a junior, won the district singles title for the third straight year. She beat her sister Jessica, a sophomore, 6-3, 6-4, for the district championship.

Edmonds-Woodway's Jeanne Paczkowski and Angie Zavalglia won the Northwest District doubles title and will go to state as the No. 1 seed from district.

Paczkowski and Zavaglia beat Cascade's Lesley McClurg and Marion Schuler for the district title, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5. McClurg and Schuler will go to state as the No. 2 seeds from district.

Paczkowski, a senior, and Zavaglia, a junior, are the co-captains for the Warriors. Zavaglia qualified for the Class AA state singles tournament as a freshman.

The Class AAA state tournament is Friday and Saturday at Sprinker Recreation Center in Tacoma.
