Anchorage Police Shoot Hostage-Taker
ANCHORAGE, Alaska
A 20-year-old man was shot to death by police on a city street early today as he held a boy believed to be his brother hostage and threatened to kill him, authorities said. Two other people were found dead at the man's home.
The boy, age 9 or 10 was not harmed, although he was sent to a hospital for observation, police said.
The incident began about 4:30 a.m. when officers received reports that a man with a gun was holding a boy hostage on a busy street on the city's east side, said Police Sgt. Steven Warner.
Authorities identified the man as Terrance Lamote Cloyd.
"Basically, what the suspect told us prior to us shooting him was that he had killed his mother and sister," Warner said. "Hostage negotiators worked with him for about an hour, unsuccessfully."
Police finally decided to shoot the man after two other people were found dead at the Cloyd home and the gunman threatened to send the boy "to meet his mother and sister," Warner said.
Officers said they believe the victims found at the home were indeed Cloyd's mother and sister, but their identities had not been
confirmed.
