One day after beating No. 1-ranked Woodinville, the Bothell High baseball team trounced No. 2 Redmond 12-1 in the final regular-season KingCo Conference game last night at Redmond's Hartman Park to keep its playoff hopes alive.
The Cougars (9-7 in KingCo, 10-9 overall) finish in a tie with Inglemoor (9-7, 12-8) for third place in the Crown Division. The two play a 3:30 p.m. tiebreaker game today at Pop Keeney Stadium for the division's final KingCo tournament berth.
Jay Schulz, who pitched a shutout Monday against Woodinville, went 3 for 5 with a double, home run and five runs batted in to lead the Cougars to their ninth victory in 11 games - including four wins against top-10 teams. Kyle Abrahamson pitched a complete game and went 2 for 4 at the plate.
Redmond (13-3, 16-3), which beat Inglemoor 6-5 in nine innings earlier yesterday, missed in its bid to catch Woodinville (14-2, 17-2) in the Crown Division race. Woodinville plays Crest champion Interlake (9-7, 12-7) at Bannerwood Park Friday night at 7:30 for the KingCo championship and Class AAA state tournament berth.
Bothell scored six first-inning runs against Redmond, helped along by a two-run Schulz double and five Redmond errors. Schulz added a two-run homer in the second, and the Cougars jumped out to a 10-1 lead after three innings. Jared Murphy, who will start on the mound for Bothell today, added three hits in four at-bats with an RBI.
Jeff D'Amico led Redmond in both games yesterday, hitting for the cycle combined. He was 2 for 3 in both games, with a triple and homer against Inglemoor and single and double against Bothell. His solo homer with one out in the top of the ninth proved the game-winner against Inglemoor.
Geoff Hirai was 2 for 3 against Bothell and pitched in both games.
Inglemoor's Jared Novak went 3 for 4 against Redmond, and Paul Reinking added two hits in four at-bats with an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases.
The Vikings' first baseman, Scott Moody, went 2 for 4 but was lost for the rest of the playoffs when he dislocated his shoulder sliding back into first on a pickoff attempt in the eighth inning.
