Schulz Stops Woodinville -- Bothell Pitcher Beats State's Top- Rated Team
Bothell senior Jay Schulz pitched his second straight shutout to earn his sixth straight victory as the Cougars upset No. 1-ranked Woodinville 2-0 in a KingCo Conference baseball game yesterday at Pop Keeney Stadium.
Schulz (6-2) struck out five, walked two and allowed six hits as the Cougars (8-7 in league, 9-9 overall) won for the eighth time in their past 10 games since a 0-5 KingCo start.
With the victory, Bothell snapped Woodinville's 14-game winning streak and stayed alive in the race for the final playoff berth in KingCo's Crown Division.
Woodinville (14-2, 17-2) remains in first place in the division but failed to clinch the division title. Second-ranked Redmond (12-2, 15-2) needs victories over Inglemoor and Bothell today to force a first-place tie and a one-game playoff against Woodinville for the division title.
Redmond was scheduled to play Inglemoor at 3:30 p.m. at Bothell's Pop Keeney Stadium, then meet Bothell at Hartman Park in Redmond at 7 p.m.
Jared Murphy led the Bothell offense yesterday, going 3 for 3 with a stolen base, run batted in and run scored. Murphy's one-out single through the left side of the infield drove home Kyle Abrahamson from third base in the fourth inning.
In the sixth, after a two-out single, Murphy scored when Mitch Entler's single got past the Woodinville center fielder for an error.
"This is a great win," said Bothell Coach Mark Oglesby, whose Cougars improved to 3-1 against teams ranked in the state's top 10. "It's just our luck being in the toughest division in the toughest league in the state."
