Symon Asher: Aggressive Sounds Of Psychedelic Rock
X Who they are
Cary Kindberg, bass. Works at American Music, does sound for bands.
Ruppi Barnickle, drums. Works only as a musician. "Without my wife, I'd be on the street," he says.
Curtis Chandler, guitarist and singer.
X How they got together
Barnickle had played professionally in his native Germany before moving to Seattle in 1989. When he got here, he saw an ad in the Rocket from Chandler, who wanted to start a band. After Barnickle and Chandler played together, they turned again to the Rocket and found the band's first bassist, and so Symon Asher was formed in early 1990.
Kindberg, who previously played in Children and Daddy Longlegs, joined the band rather precipitously a few months ago.
Kindberg: "The first time I got to play with them, Curtis called me up at 1:30 a.m. and said, `We need a new bass player and we have a gig in Pullman tomorrow. We leave at 6 a.m.' " Kindberg learned Symon Asher's songs as the band drove to Pullman.
X Changes with the addition of Kindberg on bass
Chandler: "People say we're more aggressive now. . . . The bass end is more heavy hitting, and people say we look happier now."
X How they describe their music
Kindberg: "It's kind of a heavy dance psychedelic."
Chandler: "I'd say it's more heavy groove psychedelic, not dance. Not a lot of people dance at our shows. . . . We have a whole acoustic side to us, too."
X What makes a show click
Barnickle: "The (audience) interaction - (when) you see it in the response while you play and you hear it after the songs."
Chandler: "I never open my eyes during the shows. I rarely look at the audience. . . . I am most interested in if we execute well and play well, and then there is kind of a magic and you can feel it if it occurs. You get in kind of another time where you don't know how long you're on stage."
X Where they, as a psychedelic band, fit into the grungy Seattle music scene
Barnickle: "We sometimes explain to people that one of our greatest heroes (Jimi Hendrix) came from Seattle, but he died 20 years ago."
Chandler: "We don't ever expect to be a big draw in Seattle. I think the hard-core Seattle fans are more punk or heavy metal. But that's OK with us."
X Tapes they'd take on a road trip
Kindberg: Jimi Hendrix, "Band of Gypsies"; Soundgarden, "Badmotorfinger."
Barnickle: "Temple of the Dog"; a Led Zeppelin album.
Chandler: Dinosaur Jr., "Where You Been"; Alice in Chains, "Dirt."
