Scandia Down Plans To Close Downtown Store

Scandia Down, located on Sixth Avenue a half block from the shuttered Frederick & Nelson flagship store and across the street from the closing I. Magnin, will close Tuesday.

The store, which sells high-quality pillows and comforters, linen and bedding, is closing its store because sales have been slow, said Jerry Mutal, a store owner.

Scandia's store in Bellevue Square will remain open.

"We don't have enough trade to keep both stores open," said Mutal.

He said transients, whom some store owners say have been harrassing customers in that area, posed no problem for his business. Nor has the ongoing I. Magnin liquidation sale, he said, declining further comment.

The Scandia Down space has been leased to Film Stop, a one-hour film processing shop now in the historic Coliseum Theatre building, which is being converted to a Banana Republic store.

Film Stop owner Gene Epstein said the store probably will open at the end of the month.

Frederick & Nelson closed its flagship store last May, while I. Magnin plans to shut its doors June 30.
